Inleiding
Oorspronkelijk gebouwd als school met de naam Leerplicht in 1903 in opdracht van het Ministerie van Justitie en naar ontwerp van W.C. Metzelaar. Het linker gedeelte was als gymlokaal in gebruik, het rechter gedeelte bood ruimte aan de lokalen en tegen de oostgevel een houten aanbouw. Het gebouw is momenteel in gebruik als zogenaamd halfopen gebouw voor de reclasseringsfase van detentie. Voor deze functie werd indertijd een houten entreegebouw toegevoegd. Inmiddels (1993-1994) is een verbouwing uitgevoerd waarbij de entree alsmede de achteraanbouw zijn vervangen; de hoofdmassa is daarbij gerespecteerd (alleen in de nok van het lokalengebouw is een noklicht ingebracht).
Omschrijving
Evenwijdig aan de Hoofdweg gelegen, in sobere en functionele stijl (met hier en daar aandacht voor ambachtelijke details) opgetrokken gebouw bestaande uit twee gedeelten gekoppeld door een nieuw entreegebouw. De in baksteen opgetrokken gebouwen worden gedekt door een zadeldak met pannen. Eenvoudige goot op klossen, staafankers en geblokte tandlijst; topgevels met klein 4-ruits schuifraam op verdieping. Gevelopbouw van het rechter gedeelte met drie x drie 8- ruits lokaalramen in spaarveld; hardstenen vensterbanken. Tegen de oostgevel een platte aanbouw in hout opgetrokken en voorzien van een sierlijst. Linker gedeelte is van geringere hoogte; gekoppelde lokaalramen (6-ruits) in spaarvelden waarvan twee in de voorgevel en een in de zijgevel; hardstenen vensterbanken.
Waardering
Voormalige school van cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch, typologisch en stedebouwkundig belang alsmede van belang voor de geschiedenis van de Rijkswerkinrichting Veenhuizen. Tevens functioneel onderdeel van het uitzonderlijk waardevolle complex Veenhuizen.

Introduction
Originally built as a school with the name Leerplicht in 1903 on the instructions of the Ministry of Justice and to a design by W.C. Metzelaar. Description

Former school of cultural-historical, architectural-historical, typological and urban design importance as well as of importance for the history of the State Labour Institution Veenhuizen. Also a functional component of the exceptionally valuable complex Veenhuizen.
