Inleiding
SCHUTSLUIS aangelegd in 1900 ter verbetering van de in 1823 gegraven Kolonievaart. Het oorspronkelijk tracee liep bij het voormalige Veenhuizen I langs en was deel van de omgrachting. Vermoedelijk ten tijde van de bouw van het Werkgesticht kwam een nieuw tracee in beeld. Gekozen werd voor een zo eenvoudig mogelijke afsnijding van de oude loop, in meer westelijke richting van de gestichtsgebouwen van Veenhuizen I. De plannen zijn ontwikkeld door de Hoofd-ingenieur van Rijkswaterstaat J. Strootman. De inmiddels vrijwel verdwenen giet- en smeedijzeren bewegingswerken zijn vervaardigd door ijzergieterij G.J. Wispelwey & Co. uit Zwolle. De schutsluis is thans in gebruik als stuw. Het betonnen element dat daartoe in de sluis is aangebracht valt buiten de bescherming. De bijbehorende dienstwoning is afgebroken.
Omschrijving
Sober en functioneel vormgegeven schutsluis. Sluishoofden in baksteen opgetrokken waarin schotbalksponningen; afgezet met natuurstenen dekplaten. De kolk is verbouwd tot een rechte kolk met betonnen wanden vervat in ijzeren I-profielen.
Waardering
Schutsluis van architectuurhistorisch, typologisch, waterstaatkundig en stedebouwkundig belang en van belang voor de geschiedenis van de Rijkswerkinrichting Veenhuizen. Tevens functioneel onderdeel van het uitzonderlijk waardevolle complex Veenhuizen.

Introduction
SLUICE-GATE constructed in 1900 to improve the Kolonievaart dug in 1823. The original course ran alongside the former Veenhuizen I and was part of the moat. Presumably at the time of the construction of the Labour Institution a new course came into view. A choice was made for the simplest possible cut-off of the old course, in a more westerly direction from the institutional buildings of Veenhuizen I. The plans were developed by the Chief Engineer of the State Water Authority J. Strootman. The by now almost vanished cast and wrought iron movement mechanisms were manufactured by ironworks G.J. Wispelwey & Co. from Zwolle. The sluice-gate is now in use as a weir. The concrete element that has been inserted in the sluice for this purpose falls outside the protection. The associated service dwelling has been demolished.
Description
Sober and functionally designed sluice-gate. Lock heads built up in brickwork with beam-slot grooves; finished with natural stone coping plates. The lock chamber has been converted to a straight chamber with concrete walls set in iron I-profiles.
