Omschrijving
Achthoekige watertoren uit 1874 uitgevoerd in schoon metselwerk. Het is het eerste exemplaar in Nederland waar een bakstenen muur om het reservoir is opgetrokken, hetgeen de zwaar aangelegde onderbouw verklaart. Het uiterlijk van de toren wordt gekenmerkt door een onderbouw in de vorm van een sokkelgeleding, een middendeel met verticale nissen in de gevelvlakken en een bovenbouw met horizontale geleding van sierlijsten, afgesloten door een balustrade. De toren wordt gedekt door een koperen koepeldak.
Onder de afsluitende hardstenen lijst van de sokkelgeleding is een geblokt rondboogfries met (dichtgezette) vensters. Het bouwdeel waarin het ingangsportaal is gesitueerd, is rechthoekig uitgebouwd en wordt bekroond door een gebogen fronton, waarop het vignet van het Duinwaterleidingbedrijf is aangebracht. De ingang bevindt zich tussen twee forse taps toelopende gebosseerde hardstenen pilasters met rustica, waarop twee koperen gedenkplaten. De paneeldeur bezit een gebosseerde hardstenen omlijsting, waarvan de sluitsteen voorzien is van het wapen van Den Haag. Hierboven een tweelicht, geflankeerd door hardstenen voluten en bekroond door een driehoekig fronton. Het gevelvlak daarboven wordt omlijst door in baksteen gebosseerde pilasters met composiete kapitelen. Hiertussen bevindt zich een gekoppeld rondboogvenster en daarboven een natuurstenen zuiltje met een composiet kapiteel. Het gevelvlak wordt afgesloten door een klein rondboogfries met blindnisjes. In de overige gevelvlakken zijn ongeveer halverwege smalle rondboogvensters met ruitvormige glazen aangebracht binnen een omlijsting van zware, hardstenen muurzuilen met dobbelsteenkapitelen, rustend op consoles.
De bovenbouw van de toren is voorzien van hardstenen banden en bezit onder een geprofileerde hardstenen lijst een uitkraging in de vorm van een geblokt rondboogfries met cirkelvormige nissen, die rust op gemetselde vertandingen. Boven de kroonlijst loopt een blinde, natuurstenen balustrade rondom de toren.

Description
Octagonal water tower from 1874 executed in fine brickwork. It is the first example in the Netherlands where a brick wall has been constructed around the reservoir, which explains the heavily built-up substructure. The appearance of the tower is characterised by a substructure in the form of a plinth moulding, a middle section with vertical niches in the facade planes and a superstructure with horizontal moulding of decorative mouldings, closed off by a balustrade. The tower is covered by a copper dome roof.
Below the closing hardstone list of the plinth moulding is a rusticated semicircular arch frieze with (blocked-up) windows. The building section in which the entrance portal is situated is rectangular in plan and is crowned by a curved pediment, on which the vignette of the Duinwaterleidingbedrijf is placed. The entrance is situated between two substantial tapered rusticated hardstone pilasters with rustication, on which are two copper memorial plaques. The panel door has a rusticated hardstone surround, of which the keystone is provided with the arms of Den Haag. Above this a two-light window, flanked by hardstone volutes and crowned by a triangular pediment. The facade plane above is framed by rusticated pilasters in brick with composite capitals. Between these is a coupled semicircular arch window and above it a natural stone small column with a composite capital. The facade plane is closed off by a small semicircular arch frieze with blind niches. In the remaining facade planes, narrow semicircular arch windows with diamond-patterned glazing are placed approximately halfway up within a surround of heavy hardstone wall piers with cube-shaped capitals, resting on consoles.
The superstructure of the tower is provided with hardstone bands and has below a profiled hardstone list a corbelled projection in the form of a rusticated semicircular arch frieze with circular niches, which rests on mortared crenellations. Above the cornice runs a blind natural stone balustrade around the tower.
Valuation
Water tower of cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a historical-functional component of the Duinwaterleidingcomplex and as an important link in the development of water tower architecture; the main form, use of materials and detailings are well preserved.
