Inleiding
Poortgebouw uit circa 1886 gebouwd in neo-renaissance stijl voor de strafgevangenis in Scheveningen door J.F. Metzelaar, bouwmeester voor gerechtsgebouwen en gevangenissen van het departement van Justitie. Het poortgebouw is een kopie van dat van de koepelgevangenis van Breda, door J.F. Metzelaar in 1886 ontworpen.
Omschrijving
Het in baksteen opgetrokken poortgebouw bezit een in hardsteen gebosseerde doorgang, die wordt geflankeerd door zware, taps toelopende torens. De torens hebben een met rustica beklede sokkel, hardstenen banden en hoekblokken en op consoles uitkragende weergangen met kantelen. Onder de kantelen is een geprofileerde hardstenen lijst aangebracht. De linkertoren bezit een deur aan de voorzijde en een vierruits venster met tralies aan de zijkant. De rechtertoren bezit aan de voorzijde een identiek venster. Deur en vensters worden omlijst door hardsteen en bekroond door een hanekam met rustica. Voorts zijn de torens voorzien van deels met hardsteen omlijste spleetlichten en schietgaten onder de weergangen.
Boven de poort zijn eveneens kantelen waaronder een hardstenen lijst en een gebeeldhouwd wapenschild met de Nederlandse leeuw is aangebracht.
Waardering
Poortgebouw van architectuurhistorisch en typologisch belang als zeldzaam en gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een op een middeleeuwsekasteelpoort geinspireerd ontwerp in neo-renaissance stijl. Hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering zijn gaaf bewaard. Tevens van cultuurhistorische betekenis als monumentaal onderdeel van het rond ca. 1886 gebouwde en in 1908-1911 door de architect W.C. Metzelaar uitgebreide gevangeniscomplex.

Description
The gate lodge, constructed in brick, possesses a passage with rustication in stone, flanked by heavy, tapering towers. The towers have a rusticated stone base, hardstone bands and corner blocks and projecting gun platforms with crenellations supported on consoles. Below the crenellations is a moulded hardstone cornice. The left tower has a door on the front and a four-pane window with bars on the side. The right tower has an identical window on the front. Door and windows are framed in hardstone and crowned by a weathercock with rustication. Furthermore, the towers are provided with partly hardstone-framed loopholes and gun ports below the gun platforms.
Above the gate are likewise crenellations below which is a hardstone cornice and a carved coat of arms with the Dutch lion.
Valuation
Gate lodge of architectural-historical and typological significance as a rare and well-preserved example of a design inspired by a medieval castle gate in neo-Renaissance style. Main form, material use and detailing are well preserved. Furthermore of cultural-historical significance as a monumental component of the prison complex built around 1886 and extended in 1908-1911 by architect W.C. Metzelaar.
