The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Royal Academy of Fine Arts, originally also housing an MTS for Architecture, built in 1933-1937 after a design by J.H. Plantenga, J.W.E. Buijs and J.B. Lursen in a business-expressionist style, on the site of the neo-classical academy of Zeger Reijers which was demolished for this purpose.

Appraisal

The building has a concrete frame and brick facades. It consists of four wings surrounding an interior courtyard with green space. The front wing comprises a basement and three storeys; the other three wings consist of two storeys. The floor plan and layout were designed by the Academy's director at that time, Plantenga; the elaboration and architectural design were carried out by Buijs and Lursen. The exterior is characterised by an engaging alternation of vertically and horizontally oriented building masses and window sections. The wing at Prinsessegracht consists of an elongated building mass with a basement, ground floor and two storeys, enclosed at the ends by higher and projecting building blocks. The main entrance is located in the building block at the right corner and features a concrete canopy. Above the entrance, a window section running the full height is placed in the side facade, originally containing glass bricks. In the front facade of the lower part of the wing at Prinsessegracht, the basement and ground floor are conceived as a base division; the windows of the storeys are vertically coupled by concrete framings. Internally, the higher building mass contains the vestibule, the hall and the main staircase on the right side. In the hall four short cylindrical columns correspond with protruding wall piers which are faced with blue tiles. In the front wing a corridor runs along the facade on the ground floor, with classrooms, the library and a staff room behind it. On the storeys there are classrooms. The corridors feature yellow tile wainscotings.

Against the right wing, a rectangular extension projects into the interior courtyard containing the director's office and secretariat on the ground floor and the assembly hall on the storey. Next to this extension, a steel entrance door via a dais with masonry steps provides access to the interior courtyard. Apart from at the hall, staircases are situated at the corner of the front wing and left wing and at the corner of the right wing and rear wing. These staircases feature yellow tile wainscotings and blue-coloured steel handrails. The windows with their steel frames are set in concrete framings.

In the interior, steel and glass are extensively used, particularly for the interior glazed partitions. In the hall a bronze plaque is affixed, dated January 1938, which commemorates the Academy's 250th anniversary in 1932 and the completion in that year of the design for the current building.

Appraisal

The Hague academy building is of importance because of its architectural-historical and typological value as a representative of the business-expressionist movement determined by Buijs and Lursen and because of its significance for the modernisation of architecture for art education, in connection with the educational programme, during the interwar period. Main form, material use and detailing are well preserved.

The Academy derives added situational value from its location at Prinsessegracht opposite the green area of the Koekamp.
