The register's description

Inleiding.

Omschrijving.

Introduction.

School building separated from the street by a spacious forecourt with fence, designed by B. Reinders, later deputy director of Municipal Works, built in 1873-1874 in eclectic style inspired by Venetian Renaissance. From 1874 this building housed the "First Municipal Higher Burgher School with five-year course", which was founded in 1865.

Description.

Rectangular building of three storeys, the width of three wide window bays. The richly detailed front facade is cement-rendered and possesses sculptured decorative details in natural stone. The facade is divided vertically by recessed pilasters per storey and possesses between the storeys powerfully profiled mouldings. The pilasters of ground floor and first floor bear capitals decorated with egg-and-dart moulding. The pilasters on the first floor moreover possess sculptured festoons against the bases. The round-arch windows, one per bay on ground floor and first floor and paired on the upper storey, show profiled arches with keystones, rising from pilasters. In the spandrels of the windows on ground floor and first floor sculptured fillings are placed. The attic above the strongly profiled cornice possesses above the central section a curved pediment in which a coat of arms surrounded by sculptured acanthus foliage with crown. On the pediment and on the corners of the attic stand ornamental vases with among others mask heads. The double front door is decorated with panels and possesses in the arch field a fanlight. The forecourt is separated from the street by an iron railing on a sandstone plinth with naturally stone rusticated pillar bases. The interior comprises a three-aisle vestibule with brick herringbone vaults on heavy brick pillars. This gives access to the large hall with pillars on sandstone bases and palmette capitals. Against the rendered walls are pilasters. The hall is covered by a coffered ceiling. The floor consists of sandstone tiles. The staircase on the left possesses pilasters against the walls, arched windows and niches and a ceiling with oval centrepiece. Along the staircase a wooden balustrade. The upper hall displays the same design as the lower hall.

Valuation.

The former school building with iron railing is of cultural-historical importance on account of its original function as "First Municipal Higher Burgher School" and on account of its architectural-historical value as a representative example of the eclectic building tradition based on Venetian Renaissance. Principal form, detailing and material use are intact.
