Inleiding
Dubbel herenhuis, in oorsprong genaamd villa Agata, dat het middendeel vormt van het vrijstaande, op een duintop gesitueerde bouwblok Antwerpsestraat 6/8, 10/12 en 14/16, in 1886-1887 gebouwd door architect Johannes Hendriks Beetsma in eclectische bouwstijl. Het zijn de oudste herenhuizen in het Belgisch Park.
Omschrijving
Op een duintop gebouwd dubbel herenhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaande uit een souterrain en twee bouwlagen onder een plat dak, drie vensterassen breed. In het ontwerp van de drie dubbele herenhuizen is de voorgevel van het middendeel benadrukt door deze op te trekken tot een Vlaamse topgevel met driehoekig fronton. De bakstenen gevel is geleed door geblokte lisenen. Het gepleisterde hoofdgestel is gekornist en voorzien van panelen in het fries. De Vlaamse topgevel bevat rondboogvensters, omgeven door een geblokte lijst, geblokte lisenen en een hoofdgestel met panelen in het fries. Op beide bouwlagen bevindt zich over de breedte een houten veranda, voorzien van een balustrade en een gesneden houten sierlijst langs de bovenrand, rustend op houten pijlers. Aan de linkerkant biedt een brede natuurstenen trap toegang tot de beide ingangen. De trap wordt geflankeerd door gietijzeren leeuwen. De T-vormige stolpramen bezitten alleen op de eerste bouwlaag glas- in-lood bovenlichten. De achtergevel is op de eerste bouwlaag voorzien van een veranda met een gesneden houten sierlijst, waarboven een balkon die op een houten pijler rust. De gevel wordt bekroond door een gepleisterde Vlaamse topgevel met driehoekig fronton.
Het interieur bevat onder meer in eclectische stijl geornamenteerde stucplafonds, marmeren schoorsteenmantels en een trappenhuis uit de bouwtijd.
De tuin wordt van de straat gescheiden door een gietijzeren hek op een lage bakstenen voet, voorzien van bakstenen hekpijlers met gepleisterde banden en een geprofileerde dekplaat.
Waardering
Dubbel herenhuis van architectuurhistorische waarde als representatief voorbeeld van eclectische architectuur en als oudste bebouwing van het Belgisch Park; hoofdvorm, detaillering en materiaalgebruik zijn in- en uitwendig goed bewaard. Description
Double townhouse built on a dune top on a rectangular floor plan, consisting of a basement and two storeys under a flat roof, three window bays wide. In the design of the three double townhouses, the front facade of the central part is emphasized by extending it to a Flemish gable with triangular pediment. The brick facade is articulated by blocked pilasters. The plastered main cornice is corniced and fitted with panels in the frieze. The Flemish gable contains round-arched windows, surrounded by a blocked moulding, blocked pilasters and a main cornice with panels in the frieze. On both storeys, a wooden veranda runs the full width, fitted with a balustrade and a carved wooden decorative moulding along the upper edge, resting on wooden posts. On the left side, a broad natural stone staircase provides access to both entrances. The staircase is flanked by cast iron lions. The T-shaped casement windows have stained glass fanlights only on the first storey. The rear facade on the first storey is fitted with a veranda with a carved wooden decorative moulding, above which a balcony rests on a wooden post. The facade is crowned by a plastered Flemish gable with triangular pediment.
The interior contains, among other features, stucco ceilings ornamented in eclectic style, marble fireplace mantels and a staircase dating from the period of construction.
The garden is separated from the street by a cast iron fence on a low brick base, fitted with brick fence posts with plastered bands and a profiled coping stone.
Valuation
Double townhouse of architectural-historical value as a representative example of eclectic architecture and as the oldest building in Belgisch Park; main form, detailing and use of materials are well preserved both internally and externally. As part of a building block in a design of three double townhouses, it has group value.
