Omschrijving

Description
HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. In the park of the historic country estate Vliek, several elements have been preserved that date from the 18th century, when a simple formal layout was created at Vliek. This layout, which in broad outline was preserved until the second half of the 19th century, is shown globally on the Topographic and Military map from circa 1850. The main axis of this layout still exists today and is partly formed by the avenue planted with a few avenue trees (currently American oak, 20th century), which runs down from the Nieuw Vliekerweg located on the Biessenberg and ends at the road 'Vliek' situated in the valley. At the point where the roads crossed, several rectangular walled kitchen gardens were laid out, which still exist as such and which connect to the NE side of the driveway. As an axis, the avenue continues on the far side of the valley along the slope and thus runs partway in the direction of the top of the Wijngaardsberg located on the NE side of the valley. This axis was extended to the ridge in the second half of the 19th century, or at the beginning of this century, when Vliek was in the possession of the Van Meeuwen family, and is still marked on this side by avenue trees, now partly in a double and partly in a single row of trees (currently oaks circa 1900). It is unclear whether this section of the axis ever served as a watercourse or as an avenue.
On the map from circa 1850, it can be seen that at the foot of the Wijngaardsberg there was a series of seven rectangular water basins, which were partly excavated in the second half of the 19th century. The two water basins on either side of the main axis were during this period excavated into a simple oval-shaped pond (NE side) and into a spacious landscape-style pond with an islet (SW side). The latter landscape-style pond is visible on a photograph from before 1900 (collection Jhr v. Meeuwen), as well as a winding path that led from the approach to the house to the Wijngaardsberg. The section of this winding path to the northeast of the large landscape-style pond still exists today. The water basin to the southwest of the aforementioned pond was also excavated into a landscape-style pond, but this pond has silted up over time. On the NE side of the oval-shaped pond there are also two ponds that have silted up over time; at these ponds the formal form of the layout can still be recognized. Furthermore, on the SW side of the section of the main axis on the Wijngaardsberg, several ponds were laid out, unless this occurred in the years 1907-1908, when the garden architect Dirk Frederik Tersteeg realized a layout at Vliek. On the Topographic and Military map from 1935, three ponds are indicated at this location. Of these ponds, a round basin still exists at the foot of the Wijngaardsberg, which is indicated on Tersteeg's design (collection Jhr. v. Meeuwen), and a small heart-shaped pond situated somewhat higher, surrounded by rhododendrons and woodland, located just to the northeast of this, which is fed by a natural spring on the spot and has been there from the outset. Just to the northeast of the oval pond, at the foot of the wooded Wijngaardsberg, the structure of a meanwhile silted-up weir pond is still visible, which was connected via a pipe system to the house and to the large landscape-style pond. This weir supplied (part of) the water supply for the house and provided the water pressure for a fountain in the aforementioned landscape-style pond; underwater and underground, part of the fountain and the pipe system are still present. In the second half of the 19th century, at the foot of the Wijngaardsberg, further in a southwesterly direction, a neo-Gothic garden house was built, over which an artificial waterfall also flowed. The water was led via a pipe system from a small reservoir to the garden house and flowed via an artificial waterfall over the garden house. Only the foundations of the garden house have been preserved. The location of the reservoir is still recognizable in the wood.
In the second half of the 19th century, the Wijngaardsberg in its entirety was wooded (currently oak, beech, acacia, plane tree, coniferous wood, 19th century, circa 1900 and 20th century) - unless this wooding took place largely at the beginning of this century - and provided with a simple network of winding paths. Insofar as the Biessenberg, located on the NW side of the valley, was not yet planted, it was also wooded in part (currently beeches and mixed deciduous wood, circa 1900). Adjacent to the driveway, a transverse avenue was laid out around 1930 (currently double beech, circa 1900), which connects at right angles to the SW side of the driveway, runs in a southwesterly direction and merges into the aforementioned wooded area. The transverse avenue is not yet indicated on the Topographic and Military map from 1924 but is on that from 1935. In this way, the backdrops which naturally surround the valley were furnished, thereby increasing the contrast between the openness of the valley and the enclosure of the hills on either side. The natural curved course of the foot of the Wijngaardsberg and the Biessenberg means that the valley lying between them runs in wide arcs. A situation almost ideal for the layout of a landscape-style park in the Netherlands.
The main motif of this layout is the valley on the SW and NE sides of the castle, whose outlines are determined by a winding watercourse at the foot of the Wijngaardsberg and by the winding course of the road ('Vliek', Catharinastraat). The castle forms the 'piece de resistance'. Originally, the rectangular water basins in the valley were connected by a watercourse on the NW side of it, which were filled in during the second half of the 19th century; on the SE side, the aforementioned winding water arm was then created, which emphasizes the curved course of the foot of the Wijngaardsberg and which enlivens the view from the castle in this direction. In addition to the 'natural' delimitation of the valley by the Biessenberg and the Wijngaardsberg, the views from the castle into the part of the park layout situated in the valley and the views within the park itself are arranged and given perspective by various groups of trees, such as by the group of 19th-century oaks on the NE side of the farmhouses, the groups of trees to the southwest of the house (plane tree, oak, robinia, ash, beech, chestnut, walnut, circa 1900), further in a southwesterly direction in the valley by a group with plane tree and beech (circa 1900) and a group with oak and beech (circa 1900).
In the years 1907-1908, Tersteeg drew up a plan for the park in the immediate vicinity of the castle (collection Jhr v. Meeuwen), which was executed and which in 1915 was partly simplified by the garden architect Leonard Springer (design in the Department of Special Collections, Agricultural University Wageningen). Directly adjoining the SW and SE sides of the castle, a terraced layout at different levels was realized, which are connected to each other by means of brick stairs. The terraces on the SW side of the castle are projected on the axis of the driveway and emphasize the sloping driveway in relation to the front facade of the castle. A situation which comes to the fore for the first time in Tersteeg's design and was probably not noticed beforehand. On the SE side of the bakehouse, Tersteeg designed a neo-formal parterre, which has now completely disappeared. Furthermore, probably Springer or Tersteeg planted, for the sake of the privacy of the terraced layout, the edge on the SE margin of the road 'Vliek', which consists of horse chestnut, beech, conifer, cedar and juniper. On the north side, this edge consists of tree and shrub groups through which views of the Biessenberg are possible from the terraced layout and from the house. Tersteeg designed the access bridge to the islet and possibly the rustic bathhouse, which adorns the south side of the islet in the landscape-style pond, unless this little house was placed here in the second half of the 19th century. Springer had the bridge, which Tersteeg had projected at right angles to the parterre directly on the SW side of the house, moved to its current position on the north side of the islet. Over time, the assortment of planting on the terraces on the SW side of the castle has been greatly simplified.
Originally, the Wijngaardsberg marked the boundary of the historical layout on the NE side, but the view in this direction has been somewhat disturbed by recent construction. Now the SW side of the Klein Berhemmerweg marks the boundary of the historical layout here. In a northeasterly direction, this road runs upward and offers a view of the irregular and steep wooded slopes (oak, beech and coniferous wood, 19th century and circa 1900) of the Wijngaardsberg. On the NW side, this road turns at right angles into the Catharinastraat, which marks the boundary of the historical layout here. Further to the southwest, where the Catharinastraat merges into the road 'Vliek', the boundary turns at right angles in a northwesterly direction at the point of the rectangular walled kitchen gardens, to coincide with the NE side of the driveway at the end of these gardens. On the SW side of the driveway, the boundary is marked by the aforementioned avenue, which on the SW side merges into the likewise already indicated wooded area. On the SW side, the wooded area is bounded by the Putstraat, which runs straight onto the road 'Vliek' and which marks the boundary of the historical layout here. The meadow on the Biessenberg and the wooded area on the SW side of the Putstraat do not belong to the historical layout of Vliek, but play an important role in it as a view, green buffer and as a backdrop. On the SW side, the historical layout ends at the boundary of the farmstead on the cadastral plot Meersen no. A2057. Although this farmhouse is not part of the historical layout, this historically significant building is included as a consciously chosen focal point from the park and the castle as a compositional element of great importance to the layout. On the SE side of the farmstead boundary, the boundary of the historical layout is indicated by the NE side of the straight section of the street 'Waterval' and by the path in its extension, until the point where this path meets the winding path at the top of the Wijngaardsberg.
