Inleiding
Het ca. 1875 gebouwde WOONHUIS met KOETSHUIS onderscheidt zich van de overige bebouwing aan de Beilerstraat door de afwijkende rooilijn. Het in een sobere eclectische trant gebouwde huis staat op de plaats waar zich oorspronkelijk drie woningen bevonden. Het huis staat in een gebied waar in de decennia rond de eeuwwisseling veel woonhuizen voor de gegoede burgerij en welvarende middenstand zijn gebouwd.
Omschrijving.
Het vanuit een onregelmatige plattegrond opgetrokken huis heeft een verdieping onder een met platte Friese pannen gedekt afgeknot schilddak, een tentdak en een plat dak. Het pand heeft gepleisterde gevels met schijnvoegen, een grijs geschilderde plint, licht getoogde gevelopeningen en entablementen met geprofileerde gietijzeren gootlijst. Het asymmetrische vooraanzicht wordt gekenmerkt door een avant-corps met brede afgesnoten hoeken onder een tentdak met geprofileerde noklijst en een vijf schilden tellende dakdeel met gepleisterde octogonale schoorsteenschacht met bolbekroning op het afdakje. De twee traveeën brede linker gevelpartij is voorzien van een paneel-vleugeldeur met gecanneleerde stolpnaald en bewerkt kalf met eierlijst onder een bovenlicht met gietijzeren levensboom. De linker zijgevel is onder meer voorzien van een klein ingangsportaal met plat dak, die fungeert als tussenlid naar het voormalige koetshuis. Tegen de achtergevel staat een gepleisterde uitbouw met plat dak met een iets lagere, eveneens van gepleisterde gevels en een plat dak voorziene aanbouw. Tegen de rechter zijgevel staat een verdiepingloze aanbouw met schijngevoegde gepleisterde gevels en rechtgesloten gevelopeningen onder plat dak. De rechter kopgevel van deze aanbouw is blind, de zijgevel van de hoofdvorm is op de verdieping voorzien van een venster, wat ook geldt voor de zijgevel van de iets lagere uitbouw. Het voormalige koetshuis links van het huis is verdiepingloos en heeft eveneens gepleisterde gevels met schijnvoegen onder een schilddak met platte Friese pannen en een uitkragende gootlijst. De voorzijde is voorzien van niet originele, rechtgesloten inrijdeuren en eveneens rechtgesloten vensters.
Waardering
Het karakteristieke pand is een goed en vrij gaaf voorbeeld van negentiende eeuwse woonhuisarchitectuur voor de gegoede burger en derhalve van architectuurhistorische waarde. The DWELLING HOUSE with COACH HOUSE built circa 1875 distinguishes itself from the other buildings on the Beilerstraat by the deviating building line. The house constructed from an irregular ground plan has one storey under a hipped roof with truncated ends covered with flat Frisian tiles, a tent roof and a flat roof. The building has rendered facades with false joints, a grey painted plinth, slightly arched facade openings and entablatures with profiled cast-iron gutter cornice. The asymmetrical front facade is characterised by an avant-corps with wide bevelled corners under a tent roof with profiled ridge line and a roof section with five shields with a rendered octagonal chimney stack with ball crowning on the small canopy. The two-bay wide left facade section is provided with a panel-hinged door with fluted bolster and worked calf with egg moulding below a fanlight with cast-iron tree of life. The left side facade is among other things provided with a small entrance portico with flat roof, which functions as a transition to the former coach house. Against the rear facade stands a rendered extension with flat roof with a slightly lower extension likewise provided with rendered facades and a flat roof. Against the right side facade stands a one-storey extension with false-jointed rendered facades and right-angled closed facade openings under a flat roof. The right gable end of this extension is blind, the side facade of the main building is on the storey provided with a window, which also applies to the side facade of the slightly lower extension. The former coach house to the left of the house is one-storey and likewise has rendered facades with false joints under a hipped roof with flat Frisian tiles and a projecting gutter cornice. The front is provided with non-original, right-angled closed entrance doors and likewise right-angled closed windows.
Valuation
The characteristic building is a good and fairly well-preserved example of nineteenth-century residential architecture for the wealthy burgher and therefore of architectural-historical value. The defining building is part of the valuable predominantly late nineteenth and early twentieth-century buildings on the Beilerstraat and surroundings, whereby the ensemble value is also great. The house is also part of the protected townscape Assen.
