Inleiding
HERTENSTAL uit omstreeks 1875, gelegen in de 1841 aangelegde hertenkamp. Volgens overlevering vormde de vangst van een koningshert onder Gasselternijveen in 1841 de aanleiding tot de door de toenmalige burgemeester H.J. Oosting geinitieerde aanleg van een hertenkamp die is gesitueerd aan de rand van het vroeg-negentiende eeuwse Asscher Bos. Het meest opvallende element in deze hertenkamp, die niet van rijkswege wordt beschermd, is de waarschijnlijk omstreeks 1875 gebouwde houten hertenstal.
Omschrijving.
De op een belt gebouwde houten stal heeft een onderbouw van baksteen, wanden van liggende planken en een met riet gedekt zadeldak met concaaf gewelfde dakschilden, een houten nok, geschulpte windveren en korte makelaars. De kopgevels hebben een dunne cordonlijst, een spitsboogdoorgang met profiellijst en een ronde gevelopening met omlijsting in de geveltop. De blinde zijgevels zijn voorzien van op poeren staande ronde houten kolommen, die een flauw hellend afdak dragen met geschulpte windveren, die ter hoogte liggen van de cordonlijst. Onder het afdak aan noord-oostzijde zijn drie smeedijzeren ruiven bevestigd. Rechts van de zuid-oostelijke spitsboogdoorgang is een deur uitgezaagd. Links aan de zuid-westgevel staat een ondiepe uitgebouwde "kast".
Waardering
De hertenstal is een gaaf en zeldzaam object, gelegen in een fraaie omgeving, waarvan het integraal deel uitmaakt. De stal heeft dus zowel zeldzaamheids- als ensemblewaarde en is bovendien beeldbepalend voor de hertenkamp, die ligt binnen het beschermd stadsgezicht Assen.

DEER STABLE from around 1875, situated in the deer park laid out in 1841. According to tradition, the capture of a royal stag near Gasselternijveen in 1841 provided the occasion for the establishment of a deer park, initiated by the then mayor H.J. Oosting, which is situated at the edge of the early nineteenth-century Asscher Bos. The most striking element in this deer park, which is not protected by the State, is the wooden deer stable probably built around 1875.
Description.
The wooden stable built on a belt has a substructure of brick, walls of horizontal planks and a reed-thatched gabled roof with concavely arched roof tiles, a wooden ridge, carved wind braces and short corbels. The end gables have a thin cordon moulding, a pointed arch passage with moulded profile and a round gable opening with surround in the gable apex. The blind side gables are provided with round wooden columns standing on posts, which carry a gently sloping roof with carved wind braces, positioned at the level of the cordon moulding. Under the roof on the north-east side are three wrought-iron feeding troughs attached. To the right of the south-east pointed arch passage a door has been sawn out. On the left of the south-west gable stands a shallow projecting "cupboard".
Valuation
The deer stable is an intact and rare object, situated in a fine setting, of which it forms an integral part. The stable thus has both rarity value and ensemble value and is moreover visually characteristic of the deer park, which lies within the protected townscape of Assen.
