Inleiding
Het schoolgebouw van de Rijks Hoogere Burgerschool is gebouwd in 1867 naar een ontwerp van de architect H.C. Winters. De SCHOOL staat in de "paleizenbuurt" en is gebouwd in de voor de bouwtijd gangbare eclectische stijl met een aan het neo-klassicisme ontleend fronton, waarin oorspronkelijk de naam van de school en het bouwjaar stonden vermeld. Het gebouw is in de twintigste eeuw diverse malen uitgebreid, maar deze toevoegingen vallen evenals het interieur niet onder de bescherming. Toen de H.B.S. als schooltype verdween werd het in 1972 deel van de Openbare Scholengemeenschap Assen, het Dr. Nassaucollege. Momenteel wordt het pand gebruikt door de Tweede Openbare Scholengemeenschap 'Dag Hammerskjold'. De bescherming van het schoolgebouw beperkt zich tot het exterieur van de negentiende-eeuwse opzet.
Omschrijving.
Het vrijstaande gebouw was oorspronkelijk driedelig met een op de Beilerstraat georienteerd hoofdvolume, een kortere linker en een langere rechter dwarsvleugel, die het schoolplein grotendeels omsloten. Deze negentiende eeuwse hoofdvorm is vrijwel intact gebleven omdat de uitbreiding van de school is beperkt gebleven tot het volbouwen van het toenmalige schoolplein en het uitbreiden van de linker vleugel. Het gebouw heeft een verdieping onder met geglazuurde Hollandse pannen gedekte schilddaken. De voor- en de zijgevels zijn voorzien van getoogde acht- (begane grond) en zesruitsvensters (verdieping) met hardstenen onderdorpels, profiellijsten met sluitsteen en kuif, lisenen met geprofileerd hardstenen basement, een verkropt entablement met eveneens geprofileerde gootlijst, alsmede een hardstenen plint aan de voor- en de rechter zijgevel. De negen traveeën brede, symmetrische voorgevel heeft een drie-assige, door lisenen geaccentueerde middenpartij die wordt bekroond door een fronton met terugliggend houten timpaan. De ingangstravee staat boven een hardstenen stoep en heeft op de parterre een paneel-vleugeldeur met stolpnaald, geprofileerd kalf met eierlijst en getoogd bovenlicht met gietijzeren snijraam. De omlijsting bestaat uit een hardstenen basement met houten pilasters. Deze worden beëindigd door komposietkapitelen en als consoles (atlanten) fungerende tritonen, die een uitkragende kroonlijst dragen. Het verdiepingsvenster in de middentravee heeft een vergelijkbare omlijsting. Waar het entablement kornist over de lisenen en de middenpartij is dit voorzien van consoles en tandlijst. De plintloze, vier-assige linker zijgevel heeft vensters als in de voorgevel, maar zonder kuif. De deur met vierruits-bovenlicht in deze gevel bevindt zich boven een rechtgesloten keldervenster. De kleine vierkante gevelopeningen onder de twee linker vensters zijn voorzien van diepliggende gietijzeren roosters. De toevoeging aan de oude vleugel dateert uit 1907 en is gebouwd als gymnastieklokaal op de begane grond met twee klaslokalen op de verdieping. Het hier dwars op staande gedeelte aan achterzijde (het latere gymnastieklokaal) is gebouwd in 1917. De rechter zijgevel telt acht vensterassen en een liseen die de gevel in tweeën deelt. De vensters zijn als die in de voorgevel. De kopgevel van de rechter vleugel bevat slechts een getoogd venster zonder omlijsting op de begane grond. Van de drie kleine gevelopeningen onder in de gevel is slechts de middelste nog voorzien van een origineel gietijzeren rooster als in de linker zijgevel. In de naar het voormalige schoolplein gekeerde gevel met getoogde venster bevindt zich een gevelsteen met onder meer de niet meer leesbare naam van de bouwmeester van de school. In het interieur zijn nog enkele details uit de bouwtijd van de school bewaard gebleven, waaronder een zwart-marmeren schoorsteenmantel in het vertrek links van de entree, die oorspronkelijk waarschijnlijk als directeurs- of lerarenkamer heeft gediend.
Waardering
Het monumentale pand heeft architectuurhistorische waarde als goed voorbeeld van een negentiende-eeuws schoolgebouw met de kenmerken van het eclecticisme. The nine-bay-wide, symmetrical front elevation has a three-axis central section accentuated by pilasters, which is crowned by a pediment with recessed wooden tympanum. The entrance bay stands above a hard stone stoop and has on the ground floor a panel wing door with ornamental hinge, moulded calf with egg-and-dart moulding and arched fanlight with cast-iron glazing bars. The surround consists of a hard stone base with wooden pilasters. These are terminated by composite capitals and tritons functioning as consoles (atlantes), which carry a projecting cornice. The first-storey window in the central bay has a similar surround. Where the entablature cornice overlaps the pilasters and the central section, it is furnished with consoles and dentil moulding. The plinthless, four-axis left side elevation has windows as in the front elevation, but without hoods. The door with four-light fanlight in this elevation is situated above a closed-in basement window. The small square wall openings below the two left windows are furnished with deeply recessed cast-iron grilles. The addition to the old wing dates from 1907 and was built as a gymnasium on the ground floor with two classrooms on the first storey. The section built transverse to this at the rear (the later gymnasium) was built in 1917. The right side elevation has eight window axes and a pilaster that divides the elevation in two. The windows are as those in the front elevation. The end wall of the right wing contains only an arched window without surround on the ground floor. Of the three small wall openings at the bottom of the elevation, only the central one is still furnished with an original cast-iron grille as in the left side elevation. In the elevation facing the former school courtyard with arched window there is a foundation stone with, among other things, the no longer legible name of the master builder of the school. In the interior, a few details from the building period of the school have been preserved, including a black marble fireplace surround in the room to the left of the entrance, which originally probably served as a headmaster's or staff room.

The monumental building has architectural historical value as a fine example of a nineteenth-century school building with the characteristics of eclecticism.
