Inleiding
Het ca. 1890 als DUBBEL WOONHUIS gebouwde pand heeft de stilistische kenmerken van de neo-renaissance, een stijl die karakteristiek is voor veel laat negentiende-eeuwse architectuur. Het representatieve karakter van het pand en de stijlkenmerken zijn echter beperkt tot de voorgevel, wat typerend is voor de meeste panden in een vrijwel gesloten straatwand. De zij- en achtergevel van het pand zijn voor de bescherming van ondergeschikt belang. De recente uitbouw aan achterzijde valt buiten de bescherming.
Omschrijving.
Het pand is gebouwd als dubbel woonhuis met twee bouwlagen onder een met bouletpannen gedekt afgeknot schilddak. De oorspronkelijk symmetrische, zes traveeën brede gevel van machinale baksteen wordt onder meer verlevendigd door speklagen, smeedijzeren sierankers, kraagstukken en een gepleisterde plint. De entrees bevinden zich in de risalerende buitentraveeen, met een originele paneeldeur met smeedijzeren raamijzers onder een bovenlicht met glas-in-lood in de linker travee. Het rechter deel van de gevel is op de begane grond ingrijpend gewijzigd en voorzien van een met de rest van de gevel detonerende entree en spiegelraam. De overige vensters zijn rechtgesloten en voorzien van doorgetrokken geglazuurde onderdorpels met afzaat en boogtrommels met mozaiekjes onder segmentboog met sluitsteen en doorlopende bovenrand. Aan weerszijden van de deuren bevinden zich smalle, ondiepe nissen. De afzaten onder de onderdorpels van de verdiepingsvensters vormen een doorlopende, als cordonlijst functionerende band. De risalieten worden beëindigd door topgeveltjes boven kraagstukken. Ze worden afgesloten door geprofileerde deklijsten met op de tuit een smeedijzeren versiering op ezelsrug. De vensters in de top zijn rechtgesloten onder rondboog. De vier traveeen brede gevelpartij tussen de risalieten wordt beëindigd door een lijst met bloktand, smalle profiellijst en consolevormige klampen, waartussen zich een invulling van decoratieve baksteensverbanden onder een verblendstenen rand met waterhol bevindt. In het dakschild boven de middenpartij staan twee originele dakkapellen met uitkragende dakranden, alsmede wangen en met bol bekroonde spits die zijn bedekt met zinken platen met imitatieschubben. In de onversierde zijgevels zijn kleine vensters geplaatst. Tegen de achtergevel staat een recente, een bouwlaag tellende aanbouw. Zij- en achtergevel zijn van ondergeschikt belang.

The property, built ca. 1890 as a DOUBLE DWELLING HOUSE, displays the stylistic characteristics of neo-Renaissance, a style that is characteristic of much late nineteenth-century architecture. Description.
The property was built as a double dwelling house with two storeys under a hipped roof covered with bullet tiles. The originally symmetrical, six-bay wide facade of machine brick is enlivened by, among other things, brick coursing, wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors, corbels and a plastered plinth. The entrances are located in the projecting outer bays, with an original panel door with wrought-iron window frames under a fanlight with leaded glass in the left bay. The right part of the facade has been substantially altered at ground floor level and provided with an entrance and mirror window that clash with the rest of the facade. The remaining windows are flush with the wall and provided with continuous glazed sills with stone lintels and arch rings with small mosaics under segmental arch with keystone and continuous upper edge. On either side of the doors are narrow, shallow niches. The stone lintels under the sills of the first-floor windows form a continuous band functioning as a cornice. The projecting sections are terminated by small gables above corbels. They are finished with moulded edge cornices with wrought-iron decoration on the spout. The windows in the top are flush with the wall under round arch. The gable section four bays wide between the projecting sections is terminated by a list with dentil band, narrow moulding and bracket-like clamps, between which is a filling of decorative brick bonds under a facing-brick edge with drip moulding. In the roof panel above the central section are two original roof dormers with projecting roof edges, as well as sides and a ball-crowned spire which are covered with zinc sheets with imitation shingles. Small windows are placed in the undecorated side facades. Against the rear facade stands a recent single-storey extension. The side and rear facades are of subordinate importance.
Valuation
The property has architectural-historical value as a good example of a double dwelling house built in neo-Renaissance style. It is a characteristic property in a closed street frontage in the Assen city centre, whereby in particular its ensemble value is considerable. It is also part of the protected urban townscape.
