Inleiding
Het brede WOONHUIS bestaat eigenlijk uit twee smalle panden die omstreeks 1875 zijn samengevoegd en toen de huidige, gemeenschappelijke façade hebben gekregen. In 1930 is bij een inwendige verbouwing de ruimte-indeling gewijzigd en is het pand opgesplitst in twee woningen. De in eclectische trant gebouwde voorgevel behoort tot het type dat meer is te vinden aan de Vaart en zeer karakteristiek is voor de bebouwing aldaar. Het behoort tot de panden die representatief zijn voor de woonhuizen van de gegoede Asser burgerij en hun welvaart, die samenhangt met de explosieve groei van Assen in de negentiende eeuw. De bescherming van het pand beperkt zich tot de negentiende eeuwse hoofdvorm.
Omschrijving.
Het huis is voorzien van gepleisterde gevels met schijnvoegen, hoeklisenen met casementen en voornamelijk getoogde vensters in de twee bouwlagen met cordonlijst en mezzanino met attiek, alsmede met Hollandse pannen gedekte zadel-/schilddaken. De symmetrische, vijf traveeën brede voorgevel heeft een ingangstravee die is voorzien van een op een gepleisterd basement staande houten omlijsting met verkropte kroonlijst. De paneeldeur met imitatie-stolpnaald, kalf met eierlijst en getoogd bovenlicht staat onder een niet oorspronkelijk balkon, dat rust op rijk versierde consoles. Voordeur, vensters (T-vensters op de verdieping) en de openslaande balkondeuren zijn getoogd en worden geaccentueerd door een profiellijst. De vier liggende vensters in het door een geprofileerde kroonlijst afgedekte mezzanino zijn eveneens getoogd. De iets smallere attiekverhoging is voorzien van een spaarveld. De linker, door een geprofileerde gootlijst beëindigde zijgevel heeft een getoogd venster als in de voorgevel, een waarschijnlijk later ingebouwde deur met zijlicht onder een rechtgesloten bovenlicht en enkele eveneens rechtgesloten kleine vensters. Waarschijnlijk is de overluifelde deur met zijlicht en rechtgesloten bovenlicht in de rechter zijgevel ook een toevoeging. De vensters in deze gevel zijn getoogd en op de verdieping identiek aan die in de voorgevel. De achterste liseen markeert de oorspronkelijke hoek van het pand. Het deels aan de bovenkant afgeschuinde geveldeel daarachter behoort derhalve, evenals het onderste deel van het dakschild linksachter, tot een uitbreiding van het pand naar achteren. Tegen de achtergevel staan een lage aanbouw en een nog lagere, vrij recente aanbouw, die beide zijn voorzien van een plat dak. De uitbouw en een dakkapel verbinden dit deel van het pand met het ernaast staande bouwdeel, dat is voorzien van een negentiende eeuwse dakkapel met plat dak boven de hoger opgaande achtergevel. Hierin bevinden zich op de verdieping twee porte brisees met getoogde bovenlichten, die uitkomen op een plat, dat de parterre overdekt.
Waardering
Het karakteristieke huis heeft een nog gave negentiende eeuwse voorgevel en is van architectuurhistorische waarde als specimen van representatieve negentiende eeuwse woonhuisarchitectuur. Het beeldbepalende pand maakt deel uit van de waardevolle negentiende eeuwse en vroeg twintigste eeuwse bebouwing aan de Vaart en heeft derhalve grote ensemblewaarde. Het huis is tevens onderdeel van het beschermde stadsgezicht.

The broad RESIDENTIAL HOUSE actually consists of two narrow properties that were joined around 1875 and were then given the current, shared façade. In 1930, during internal renovation, the spatial layout was altered and the property was divided into two dwellings. The front façade built in an eclectic style belongs to the type that is more frequently found at the Vaart and is very characteristic of the building development there. It belongs to properties that are representative of the residential houses of the well-to-do Assen citizens and their prosperity, which is connected to the explosive growth of Assen in the nineteenth century. The protection of the property is limited to the nineteenth-century principal form.
Description.
The house is provided with plastered façades with rustication, corner pilasters with casements and predominantly arched windows in the two storeys with a string course and mezzanine with attic, as well as with Dutch tile-covered gabled/hipped roofs. The symmetrical, five-bay wide front façade has an entrance bay that is provided with wooden framing standing on a plastered basement with a projecting cornice. The panel door with imitation pointed finial, calf with egg moulding and arched fanlight stands under a non-original balcony, which rests on richly decorated consoles. Front door, windows (T-windows on the storey) and the opening balcony doors are arched and are emphasized by a moulded band. The four horizontal windows in the mezzanine covered by a moulded cornice are likewise arched. The slightly narrower attic section is provided with a spandrel. The left side façade, terminated by a moulded gutter moulding, has an arched window as in the front façade, a probably later built-in door with side light under a straight fanlight and several likewise straight-edged small windows. Probably the open-eaved door with side light and straight fanlight in the right side façade is also an addition. The windows in this façade are arched and on the storey identical to those in the front façade. The rear pilaster marks the original corner of the property. The partly bevelled-off façade section behind it belongs, like the lower part of the left rear roof slope, to an extension of the property towards the rear. Against the rear façade stand a low extension and an even lower, fairly recent extension, both of which are provided with a flat roof. The outbuilding and a roof dormer connect this part of the property with the adjacent building section, which is provided with a nineteenth-century roof dormer with flat roof above the higher rising rear façade. Within it are located on the storey two French doors with arched fanlights, which open onto a flat roof that covers the ground floor.
Valuation
The characteristic house has a well-preserved nineteenth-century front façade and is of architectural-historical value as a specimen of representative nineteenth-century residential house architecture. The prominent property is part of the valuable nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century building development at the Vaart and therefore has considerable group value. The house is also part of the protected townscape.
