Inleiding
In 1800 werd het op dit perceel staande WOONHUIS met koetshuis bewoond door mr. Petrus Hofstede, de latere gouverneur van Drenthe. Het huis was in 1832 in gebruik bij de eerste in Drenthe gevestigde chirurg dr. Amshoff. Het huidige aanzien van het huis is het resultaat van een omstreeks 1875 uitgevoerde verbouwing in een eclectische stijl. Het huis is sterk verwant aan de panden Vaart ZZ 25a;27;29 alsmede de nummers 42 en 46 aan de noordzijde van de Vaart. Het pand behoort tot de vele grotendeels negentiende en vroeg twintigste eeuwse woonhuizen voor de gegoede burger aan de Vaart, die getuigen van de toenemende welstand van vele Assenaren als gevolg van de explosieve groei van Assen in die periode.
Omschrijving. Het huis heeft gepleisterde gevels, een verdieping en een mezzanino met attiek onder een plat en een met Hollandse pannen gedekt zadeldak met flauw hellende dakschilden. Het vooraanzicht is in grote lijnen symmetrisch met een twee traveeën breed middenrisaliet met grijze plint, hoeklisenen met casementen en schijnvoegen. De vensters in voor- en zijkant van het risaliet, zowel als de vensters in de terugliggende zijtraveeen zijn getoogd en voorzien van bovenramen met loden strips, een profiellijst en doorgetrokken onderdorpels. De lisenen worden beëindigd door een tandlijst aan de geprofileerde kroonlijst, die doorloopt over de zijkanten van het risaliet en de zijtraveeen. Het risaliet heeft een mezzanino met getoogde blinde vensters en een geprofileerde kroonlijst op het attiek. De linker travee is voorzien van een paneel-vleugeldeur met gietijzeren raamijzers, gecanneleerde stolpnaald, geprofileerd kalf en getoogd, met glas-in-lood ingevuld bovenlicht binnen een geprofileerde omlijsting, die door middel van kleine consoles is verbonden met de segmentboogvormige kroonlijst. Waardering

Introduction
In 1800 the RESIDENTIAL HOUSE with coach house standing on this plot was inhabited by mr. Petrus Hofstede, the later governor of Drenthe. The house was in use in 1832 by dr. Amshoff, the first surgeon established in Drenthe. The current appearance of the house is the result of renovation in an eclectic style carried out around 1875. The house is closely related to the properties Vaart ZZ 25a;27;29 as well as the numbers 42 and 46 on the north side of the Vaart. The property belongs to the many largely nineteenth and early twentieth-century residential houses for the well-to-do citizen at the Vaart, which testify to the increasing prosperity of many Assenaren as a result of the explosive growth of Assen in that period.
Description. The house has plastered façades, a storey and a mezzanine with attic under a flat and Dutch tile-covered gabled roof with gently sloping roof slopes. The front elevation is broadly symmetrical with a two-bay wide central risalite with grey plinth, corner pilasters with casements and rustication. The windows on the front and side of the risalite, as well as the windows in the recessed side bays are arched and provided with upper windows with leaded cames, a moulded band and continuous sills. The pilasters are terminated by a dentil band at the moulded cornice, which continues over the sides of the risalite and the side bays. The risalite has a mezzanine with arched blind windows and a moulded cornice on the attic. The left bay is provided with a panel swing door with cast-iron frame ironwork, fluted pointed finial, moulded calf and arched fanlight filled with leaded lights within a moulded frame, which by means of small consoles is connected with the segmental arched cornice. The right bay (probably the former coach house) is provided with an opening double carriage door under an arched fanlight within a frame like that around the windows. The right side façade is provided with an arched blind window on the storey and a straight-edged entrance. The rear, unplastered part of the house has a flat roof and is probably added. In the left side façade there is likewise a straight-edged entrance, but with side light, a higher placed window (stairlight) and a projecting chimney shaft. The side façades are terminated by a cornice with dentil band. At the rear stands an outbuilding with a lower extension, both provided with a flat roof.
Valuation
The characteristic house has architectural-historical value because of the well-preserved nineteenth-century front façade and as an example of representative residential house architecture for the well-to-do citizens. The prominent property is part of the valuable, largely nineteenth and early twentieth-century building development at the Vaart and therefore has considerable group value. The house also forms part of the protected townscape Assen.
