Inleiding
Het omstreeks het midden van de negentiende eeuw gebouwde WOONHUIS is gebouwd in een aan het neo-klassicisme ontleende (empire)stijl. Het is een van de waardevolle, voor de gegoede burgerij gebouwde huizen aan de Vaart, die representatief zijn voor de groeiende welstand van vele Assenaren, die een gevolg is van de explosieve ontwikkeling van Assen in de negentiende eeuw.
Omschrijving. Het vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken pand heeft gepleisterde gevels en een verdieping onder een met verbeterde Hollandse pannen gedekt zadeldak. De drie-assige voorgevel, die breder is dan het pand, is voorzien van een grijze plint, getoogde gevelopeningen met profiellijsten en doorgetrokken onderdorpels, alsmede een mezzanino met attiekverhoging. De entree betreft een eenvoudige paneeldeur onder een kalf met eierlijst en bovenlicht met smeedijzeren krulornament binnen een omlijsting van pilasters met opgevulde casementen en consoles die een geprofileerde segmentboog dragen. De vensters op de verdieping bezitten nog de originele zesruits schuiframen. De mezzanino heeft een liggend, getoogd venster en bevindt zich tussen een brede, geprofileerde cordonlijst en een eveneens geprofileerde kroonlijst. De smalle attiekbalustrade is voorzien van casementen. De stoep is geplaveid met keien achter een erfscheiding van conische stoeppalen, die deels nog zijn voorzien van een ketting. Beide zijgevels zijn gepleisterd, evenals de achtergevel, die onder meer is voorzien van een porte brisée op de verdieping.
Waardering
Het karakteristieke huis is een eenvoudig, doch mooi en gaaf voorbeeld van negentiende eeuwse woonhuisarchitectuur voor de gegoede burgerij. Het beeldbepalende pand maakt deel uit van de waardevolle, voornamelijk negentiende en vroeg-twintigste eeuwse bebouwing aan de Vaart en heeft derhalve grote ensemblewaarde. Introduction
The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE built around the middle of the nineteenth century was built in a style derived from neo-classicism (empire style). It is one of the valuable houses built for the well-to-do citizens on the Vaart, which are representative of the growing prosperity of many inhabitants of Assen, which is a result of the explosive development of Assen in the nineteenth century.
Description. The building, erected from a rectangular ground plan, has rendered facades and an upper storey under a saddle roof covered with improved Dutch tiles. The three-axis front facade, which is wider than the building, is provided with a grey plinth, arched openings with profiled mouldings and continuous sills, as well as a mezzanine with attic heightening. The entrance is a simple panel door under a calf with egg moulding and fanlight with wrought-iron scroll ornament within a surround of pilasters with filled casements and corbels carrying a profiled segmental arch. The windows on the upper storey still have the original six-pane sash windows. The mezzanine has a horizontal arched window and is situated between a broad profiled string course and an equally profiled cornice. The narrow attic balustrade is provided with casements. The stoep is paved with cobblestones behind a boundary fence of conical bollards, some of which are still provided with a chain. Both side facades are rendered, as is the rear facade, which among other things is provided with a porte brisée on the upper storey.
Valuation
The characteristic house is a simple, yet fine and intact example of nineteenth-century residential architecture for the well-to-do citizens. The eye-catching building is part of the valuable, predominantly nineteenth- and early twentieth-century development on the Vaart and therefore has considerable ensemble value. The building is also part of the protected townscape Assen.
