Inleiding
Het in 1862 als sluiswachterswoning gebouwde, vrijstaande WOONHUIS staat dicht bij de plaats waar zich vroeger een schutsluis bevond in het in 1861 voor de scheepvaart opengestelde Noord Willemskanaal. Het op een helling van de stuwkade liggende huis verloor zijn oorspronkelijke functie toen het westelijke deel van het kanaal zijn betekenis voor de scheepvaart kwijt raakte en gedeeltelijk gedempt werd. Aan de andere kant van het "kanaal" staat nog het in de zelfde periode gebouwde voormalige huis van de havenmeester.
Omschrijving. Het verdiepingloze, vanuit een vierkante plattegrond opgetrokken pand met souterrain aan achterzijde heeft een met Hollandse pannen gedekt, uitkragend zadeldak met twee overdekte schoorsteenschachten met bewerkte windveren en hangstijlen. De grijs geverfde, gepleisterde voorgevel heeft een symmetrische indeling met geschilderde plint, staafankers, originele paneeldeur onder rechtgesloten tweeruits bovenlicht met aan weerszijden een rechtgesloten zesruits schuifvenster. De linker kopgevel heeft eveneens een symmetrische indeling met rechtgesloten vensters onder strekken op de bel-etage en in het souterrain halfronde gevelopeningen, waarvan de linker is dichtgemetseld, de grotere in het midden een rond ijzeren venster bevat en alleen de rechter nog in oorspronkelijke staat is met een halfrond ijzeren venster. De achtergevel is op souterrainniveau voorzien van staafankers, een slechts ca. 1.25 meter hoge rondboogdeur, een rond, taatsdraaiend ijzeren venster rechts van de deur en een halfrond ijzeren venster links in de gevel. Rechts op de bel-etage staat een rechtgesloten zesruits schuifvenster. Ook de rechter kopgevel is symmetrisch en vergelijkbaar met de linker kopgevel, maar met een segmentboogvenster op de zolderverdieping. De drie leilinden aan de voorgevel verwijzen nog naar de oorspronkelijke situering in een destijds nog landelijk gebied.
Waardering
Het vrij gave, karakteristieke huisje is vanwege de oorspronkelijke functie van historisch belang als overblijfsel van een belangrijke negentiende eeuwse infrastructurele en civiel-technische voorziening. Hoewel het pand tegenwoordig in een na-oorlogse stadsuitbreiding staat is het een beeldbepalend object dat mede vanwege de relatie met het voormalige havenmeesterskantoor en de verdwenen schutsluis tevens ensemblewaarde heeft.

Introduction
The HOUSE built in 1862 as a lock-keeper's cottage, standing detached, is located close to where a lock formerly stood in the Noord Willemskanaal, which was opened to shipping in 1861. The house, situated on a slope of the weir embankment, lost its original function when the western section of the canal ceased to be important for shipping and was partially filled in. On the other side of the "canal" still stands the former house of the harbour master, built in the same period.
Description. The single-storey building, constructed from a square ground plan with basement at the rear, has a gabled roof covered with Dutch tiles with overhanging eaves, two covered chimney stacks with worked wind vanes and hanging stiles. The grey-painted, plastered front facade has a symmetrical layout with painted plinth, fascia anchors, original panel door under a straight-across two-pane fanlight with on either side a straight-across six-pane sash window. The left side facade is also symmetrically laid out with straight-across windows under stretching on the principal floor and on the basement level semi-circular openings, of which the left is bricked up, the larger one in the middle contains a round iron window and only the right one is still in original condition with a semi-circular iron window. The rear facade is provided at basement level with fascia anchors, a door with round arch only approximately 1.25 metres high, a round, casement iron window to the right of the door and a semi-circular iron window to the left in the facade. To the right on the principal floor stands a straight-across six-pane sash window. The right side facade is also symmetrical and comparable with the left side facade, but with a segmental-arched window on the attic storey. The three lime-linden trees at the front facade still point to the original location in what was then a rural area.
Valuation
The fairly intact, characteristic cottage is of historical importance because of its original function as a surviving example of an important nineteenth-century infrastructural and civil-engineering facility. Although the building nowadays stands in a post-war suburban development, it is a visually prominent object which, because of its relationship with the former harbour master's office and the disappeared lock, also has ensemble value.
