Inleiding

Introduction

The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE (with stoop) built in the first half of the nineteenth century on the slope of the southern ridge of the Vaart was originally probably single-storey and of the Asser type. The building was altered and enlarged around 1880. In this process the front facade was clad with plaster and provided with accolade arches above the windows, which soon gave the house the name 'House with the Eyebrows'. The front facade has the specific characteristics of eclecticism and forms part of the valuable, primarily nineteenth and early twentieth-century residential architecture on the Vaart.

Description. The townhouse built from a rectangular floor plan with basement has one storey beneath a hipped roof covered with flat Frisian tiles with roof ornaments (one of which has been broken off). The symmetrical, five-bay wide facade is plastered and provided with relieving lines. On either side of the entrance are two flat, straight-topped basement windows. The entrance arrangement consists of a limestone stoop, which leads to a panel-wing door with profiled calf and straight-topped fanlight. The frame consists of pilasters with casements, which carry an entablature with projecting cornice. The windows on either side of the entrance stand within lightly arched profile mouldings beneath accolade arches. Above the otherwise identical upper-floor windows these arches are absent. The facades are terminated by a simple, unprofilied cornice. The side facades are built behind a narrow continuation of the plastering of the front facade in fair-faced brick and provided with rod anchors. In the left facade is a straight-topped, renewed porch with the remains of a lintel, plastered walls and a non-original wing door beneath worked calf and fanlight with leaded-glass infill. To the right of the entrance is a small iron hatch in the wall. The right facade has on the upper floor a round facade opening with cast iron grille window. Both side facades are built on the ground floor in handmade brick and have added upper-floor walls built in machine-made brick. The building has on the rear a lean-to consisting partly of one and partly of two storeys with flat roofs, which has been added in part (possibly at the alteration of the building in 1913); this extension is of secondary importance for the protection.

Valuation

The fairly well-preserved and characteristic house (with stoop) is of architectural-historical importance because of its building history and as a typical representative of nineteenth-century residential architecture for the well-to-do burghers. The dominant building forms part of the valuable, primarily nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century buildings on the Vaart and therefore has great ensemble value. It furthermore forms part of the protected townscape of Assen.
