Inleiding
Evenwijdig aan de weg gelegen MARECHAUSSEE kazerne gebouwd in 1921 naar ontwerp van de 'Majoor-eerstaanwezend-ingenieur' gevestigd te Zwolle in opdracht van het Eerste Commandement Groningen. Het is een voorbeeld van eenvoudige maar degelijke Interbellum Architectuur.
Omschrijving.
In baksteen opgetrokken symmetrisch gebouw met in het midden een risaliserend gedeelte met twee bouwlagen, gedekt door een schilddak; dakkapel. Aan weerszijden van het middenstuk een vleugel met een bouwlaag en een verdieping onder de ruime mansardekap; schoorstenen, houten dakkapellen; eenvoudig geprofileerde goten op klossen. Licht uitgemetselde lisenen waartussen spaarvelden met venster- en deuropeningen. Bovenlicht van de deuren met ruitvormige roedeverdeling. Boven de hoofdentree en achter het wapenschild een zandstenen plaquette met wapenschild en opschrift Je Maintendrai. Zij- en achtergevels in vergelijkbare stijl uitgevoerd. In het midden van de achtergevel ligt de voormalige paardestal met bergplaatsen. Dit een bouwlaag tellend bakstenen gedeelte wordt gedekt door een schilddak en staat door middel van een tussenlid met de kazerne in verbinding.
Waardering
De kazerne is van cultuurhistorisch belang en verkrijgt in dit opzicht een meerwaarde door de functionele samenhang met het naastliggende eveneens van rijkswege beschermde douanekantoor. Architectuurhistorisch is het gebouw van typologisch belang vanwege de plaats die het inneemt binnen de ontwikkeling van de kazernebouw. Bovendien is het gebouw, samen met het naastliggende douanekantoor, beeldbepalend voor de directe omgeving waardoor tevens sprake is van een stedebouwkundig belang.

A BARRACKS of the Marechaussee situated parallel to the road, built in 1921 according to a design by the 'Major-first-present-engineer' based in Zwolle on the orders of the First Command Groningen. It is an example of simple but solid Interbellum Architecture.

A symmetrical building constructed in brick with a projecting section in the centre containing two storeys, covered by a hipped roof; roof dormer. On either side of the central section a wing with one storey and a first floor beneath a spacious mansard roof; chimneys, wooden roof dormers; simply moulded gutters on corbels. Lightly rendered pilasters with intervening wall surfaces containing window and door openings. Fanlights of the doors with diamond-shaped glazing bars. Above the main entrance and behind the coat of arms a sandstone plaque with coat of arms and inscription Je Maintendrai. Side and rear facades executed in comparable style. In the centre of the rear facade lies the former horse stable with storage spaces. This one-storey brick section is covered by a hipped roof and is connected to the barracks by means of an intermediate link.
Valuation
The barracks are of cultural-historical importance and gain added value in this respect through functional coherence with the adjoining customs office which is likewise protected by the State. From an architectural-historical perspective the building is of typological importance because of the place it occupies in the development of barracks construction. Moreover, the building, together with the adjoining customs office, is image-defining for the immediate surroundings, which also confers urban planning importance.
