Inleiding

Introduction

ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH built by architect J. van Dongen Jr. (Apeldoorn) in 1932 in the style of Traditionalism. The roadside hamlet of Steenwijksmoer developed in the nineteen-thirties into a centre of Catholicism. Apart from a church building, a parsonage (also designed by Van Dongen) and a school also arose, although both are not protected by national heritage law. The church building has only undergone a few minor alterations near the sacristy. Thus, among other things, the original connecting passage to the parsonage has been removed. The windows were originally filled with stained glass by Albert Verschuuren.

Description.

A spacious hall church built entirely in yellow brick with a nave of six bays, a baptistry, devotional chapels, a sacristy and a robust tower. Nave and tower are covered by a gabled roof with red Deester tile, the annexes with a hipped roof; simple gutters. Natural stone (Brauvillier limestone) accents at windows and doors. The nave has three pointed-arch windows per bay in a spandrel and mortared buttresses; the higher-raised walls of the choir each count four pointed-arch windows. Entrance in the western, symmetrically arranged stepped gable with a recessed portal; single and double wooden doors with heavy ornamental hinges; pointed-arch windows on either side and above the portal. The devotional chapel, baptistry and sacristy are built in similar style. The tower on the east side has a heavy structure with a buttress and a tall stairwell with catslide roof; chimney; gabled roof; at the sides large pointed arches at the level of the bell chamber; waterspouts.

The INTERIOR is characterised by the spacious layout of the nave with a wooden truss structure resting on consoles (framework and tie-beam); the choir has a pointed-arch-shaped vault.

Valuation

Church of cultural-historical importance as a special expression of a spiritual development. Of architectural-historical importance because of its design; the place it occupies within the oeuvre of a nationally known architect; the use of materials and integrity. Of urban-planning importance as a defining element in the centre of the Catholic settlement.
