Inleiding
De Rooms Katholieke St. Willibrordkerk is gebouwd in 1913-1914 naar ontwerp van W. te Riele uit Deventer en uitgevoerd door aannemer A. de Boer uit Coevorden. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in een eenvoudige Neo-Gotische stijl. De in 1925 door de Fa. Cuypers uit Roermond aangebrachte interieurbeschilderingen zijn verdwenen. Het interieur valt niet onder de bescherming.
Omschrijving.
In baksteen opgetrokken neo-gotische kerk met a-symmetrisch geplaatste toren. De samengestelde kapvorm is met leien gedekt. Middenschip met lichtbeuk; zijbeuken met steunberen en spitsboogvensters; octogonaal doopkapel met tentdak; absis met spitsboogvensters met glas-in-lood ramen vervaardigd door F. Nicolas & Zn (Roermond); sacristie. De a-symmetrische voorgevel heeft een diepliggend portaal met archivolten en penant; enkele en dubbele houten deuren met zwaar siergeheng; aanleunend trappenhuis met in blinde nissen opgenomen vensters; diverse spitsboogvensters en markante toren met ingesnoerde spits en naald. Detaillering onder meer met siermetselwerk en profielsteen.
Waardering
De St. Willibrordkerk is van cultuurhistorisch belang vanwege de kerkelijke ontwikkeling van Coevorden. De sobere vormgeving is te beschouwen als waardevolle representant van de jongere Neogotische kerkgebouwen in Drenthe.
