The register's description

Basement GARAGE BUILDING with five sloping storeys grouped around a wedge-shaped light court and with extended showroom, workshops and offices, erected using a concrete skeleton on a foundation of an irregular ellipse, with brick walls whereby the internal sloping floors - which bridge a height difference of 3 m. per storey - are reflected in the obliquely placed window strips which are applied over virtually the full width of the facade on the first, second and third storeys - interrupted at the stairwell which is situated at the S end of the approximately 60 m. long longitudinal axis against the most projecting facade wall - executed in 1929-'30 according to the design of J.Greve in an expressionist-tinged, functional style.

The essentially flat roof, in which the sloping floor principle is continued, is executed in concrete, with slight overhang, beneath which a decorative tooth course in the brick facade is applied. The windows on the first four storeys are provided with a roller shutter at the bottom and a concrete upper lintel - above which small air vents are incorporated in the masonry -, while the small, regularly distributed windows on the fourth storey have a concrete lower lintel; of all windows the original steel glazing bars are partially removed.

The blocky section which originally contained the workshops shows a kink with the flat facade section adjoining it to the left on the Torenstraat - which makes a slight bend there -; this building block contains a concrete balcony with steel railing on the first storey, the left half of the three upper storeys each has a series of three coupled windows and the right half an oriel window, entirely consisting of steel and glass; the block is closed off at the far right in a manner related to the work of W.M. Dudok by means of a transverse wall built forward and rising above the whole, on which in origin the words 'garage'-horizontally- and 'automobielen'-vertically - were applied.

The connection of the flat facade section with the quarter-circle curved facade section, where the entrance ramp is also incorporated, is marked on the right side on the storey by a projecting, half-cylindrical lantern; on the left side, partially flat-roofed and partially covered by a recent dome roof, a showroom of one storey is built out.

At the actual garage building the transition from the high to the half-height section is marked by the projecting, blocky stairwell which has on the left side a narrow oriel window consisting of steel and glass and crowned by a higher built transverse wall; on the ground floor there are two entrances, one of which is intended for cars and is further marked by an equally half-cylindrical lantern.

The quarter-circle curved facade section adjoining the Geest side contains at the far right per storey a rectangular and a circular window and is subsequently articulated by the slanting window strips which start here already on the ground floor, which is continued in the flat facade wall on the Pastoorswarande, whereby the presence of the basement is also expressed in the low square windows. This facade section acquires at the inner courtyard at the far left again a quarter-circle curved profile, which is accentuated by a raising of the roof, as on the right side. Adjacent to this inner courtyard further is the blocky workshop building which continues to the Torenstraat and whose facades are articulated by horizontal window strips.

Internally the garage space is divided by the concrete columns into three aisles, whereby the roadway is situated in the middle and the parking spaces on either side; in origin on the first, second and third storeys a dozen boxes were arranged around the light court, while the fourth storey contained only boxes, fifty-four in total.

Garage building with ancillary spaces of characteristically expressionist-functional architecture for the time of its creation due to the application on the one hand of striking masonry details and interlocking blocky building volumes and half-cylindrical lanterns and on the other hand a design entirely oriented to the various functions - through the introduction of a pseudo-ellipsoidal ground form with corresponding sloping floors, continued right to the roof, and divergent, cubic ground forms for otherwise designated spaces - as well as a design entirely attuned to the building materials used with a deliberately visible use of a concrete skeleton with brick cladding walls, broken by long window strips, and with oriel sections built of steel and glass; furthermore of importance in typological respect as the first example in the Netherlands of a parking garage built as such, as a solution to the parking problem in the city centre, and also of urban design significance due to its location in the bend of the Torenstraat, created in connection with the traffic breakthrough executed in 1924.

Complex of general importance due to architectural-historical and urban design value and from the point of view of typological development.
