inleiding In 1930-33 naar ontwerp van architect B.T. Boeyinga en constructeur ir. I.J. Kranenburg ten behoeve van de nieuw opgerichte vierde faculteit van de Vrije Universiteit gerealiseerd LABORATORIUM, uitgevoerd in late Amsterdamse Schooltrant met in oorsprong vier bouwlagen voor de scheikundige afdelingen en drie bouwlagen voor de natuurkundige afdelingen onder een pannen kap.
In 1951-52 is het gebouw naar ontwerp van dezelfde architect, doch in soberder trant, met twee of drie bouwlagen verhoogd tot een geheel van zes plat afgedekte lagen en van een observatorium met koepel voorzien.

Het aan drie zijden vrijstaande laboratoriumgebouw is op L-vormige plattegrond met afgeschuinde ZW-hoek opgetrokken in baksteen op een natuurstenen plint en afgewisseld door betonbanden bij de vensters en siermetselwerk, waarbij in oorsprong de afzonderlijke, voor scheikunde respectievelijk natuurkunde bestemde laboratoriumruimten elk in een vleugel aan weerszijden van het centrale trappenhuis waren ondergebracht. De oorspronkelijke laboratoriumvensters zijn gevat in stalen kozijnen met verticale onderverdeling en in glassteen uitgevoerde bovenlichten; zij zijn omlopend over de gevels aangebracht. De gevels van het onderkelderde gebouw zijn merendeels licht teruggerooid en voorzien van een eenvoudig voetinghek.
Het naar voren springende trappenhuis aan de De Lairessestraat is voorzien van twee verticale stroken met glasstenen en toegankelijk via de rechts gesitueerde, lage ingangsportiek met drie treden tellende stoep, natuurstenen bekleding en een doorgetrokken luifel, waarboven over twee bouwlagen een muurvlak van afwisselend reliefrijk gemetselde baksteen- en betonbanden. De ingang zelf bestaat uit stalen deuren met elk een verticale glasstrook met kleine ruiten; links bij de afgeronde hoeken bronzen naamplaquettes met: "scheikundig laboratorium en natuurkundig laboratorium" en op de luifel het opschrift: "vrije universiteit". Boven de rechter portiekpijler en op de driehoekig uitstekende gevelrand bij de tweede verdieping twee beeldhouwwerken van Theo van Reyn die naar de oorspronkelijke functies van de VU- laboratoria verwijzen. Links van het trappenhuis voor de beganegrond een door vierkante betonkolommen afgescheiden portico, waaronder de trap naar de fietsenkelder leidt, met in de gevel direct naast het trappenhuis vier geinciseerde profiel-portretten.
De zuidgevel heeft in het teruggerooide linkerdeel twee groepen van zes, respectievelijk drie gekoppelde vensters per bouwlaag en in het naar voren gerooide gedeelte een groep van vier gekoppelde vensters, waarbij telkens de twee vensters aan de uiteinden smaller zijn dan die in het midden.
De stroken van gekoppelde vensters van de voormalige natuurkundige afdeling beginnen aan de De Lairessestraat met op de beganegrond een en op de twee bovenlagen elk twee tweeledige vensters; zij worden via de een venster-as brede afgeschuinde zijde voortgezet en tellen elf venster-assen aan de zijde van de Lassusstraat.

The laboratory building, free-standing on three sides, is erected on an L-shaped plan with chamfered SW corner in brick on a natural stone plinth and alternated by concrete bands at the windows and ornamental brickwork, whereby originally the individual laboratory spaces intended for chemistry and physics respectively were each housed in a wing on either side of the central staircase. The original laboratory windows are set in steel frames with vertical division and fanlights executed in glass brick; they are arranged running around the facades. The facades of the basement building are mostly slightly recessed and provided with a simple base railing.
The projecting staircase at the De Lairessestraat is provided with two vertical strips of glass brick and accessible via the low entrance portico situated to the right with a stoop counting three steps, natural stone facing and a continuous canopy, above which over two storeys a wall surface of alternating relief-rich laid brick and concrete bands. The entrance itself consists of steel doors each with a vertical strip of glass with small panes; at the rounded corners bronze name plaques with: "chemical laboratory and physical laboratory" and on the canopy the inscription: "vrije universiteit". Above the right portico pillar and on the triangularly projecting facade edge at the second floor two sculptures by Theo van Reyn which refer to the original functions of the VU laboratories. To the left of the staircase at ground floor level a portico separated by square concrete columns, beneath which the staircase to the bicycle basement leads, with in the facade directly beside the staircase four incised profile portraits.
The south facade has in the recessed left part two groups of six and three respectively coupled windows per storey and in the forward-projecting part a group of four coupled windows, whereby each time the two windows at the ends are narrower than those in the middle.
The strips of coupled windows of the former physical department begin at the De Lairessestraat with on the ground floor one and on the two upper storeys each two two-part windows; they are continued via the one window-axis wide chamfered side and number eleven window-axes on the side of the Lassusstraat.
