Omschrijving
Inleiding.
H. Marthakerk.

Description
Introduction.
H. Marthakerk. A church building standing freely on three sides, built in 1908-1909, constructed after a design by N. Molenaar sr. in neo-Gothic style and completed in 1924 with the end bay of the nave and the tower by N. Molenaar jr.
Description.
Three-aisled neo-Gothic hall church with a gabled roof, with a 5/8th closed choir, three transepts, straight-sided side chapels on either side of the choir, and a gabled-roof tower beside the front facade. On the slate-covered roof stands a narrow lantern. The roof cornice is decorated with a pointed-arch frieze. In the front facade is a rose window, beneath which is a row of seven pointed-arch windows. The entrance portal is provided with brick archivolts and possesses a double panelled door with substantial ornamental hinges. On either side of this are two pointed-arch windows. In the gable top are five pointed-arch niches, some with windows and a shutter. The gabled-roof tower on the left is likewise provided with pointed-arch windows. To the left and right of the front facade are entrance portals beneath a lean-to roof. The three transepts are marked externally by stepped gables. The brickwork is decorated with bands and figures of yellow brick, and a pointed-arch frieze beneath the roof cornice. In the gable tops are three-light pointed-arch windows. The choir possesses pointed-arch windows with brick tracery and a pointed-arch frieze beneath the roof cornice. On either side of the choir stands an ancillary building; on the side of the Stortenbekerstraat, closed off by stepped gables and covered by a gabled roof. Beneath the roof cornice an ornamental brick band is applied. Both ancillary buildings possess a stair tower with a spire. The building on the north side serves as a sacristy. Between this building and the transept is the parish hall, which is enclosed at the top by an open balustrade. The interior of the church, inspired by the nave of the Great or St James's Church in The Hague, contains spacious side chapels with transversely directed wooden barrel vaults which connect to the central nave beneath a barrel vault in the longitudinal direction of the church. The barrel vaults are decorated with decorative paintings. The church has articulated brick piers, clad with yellow facing brick which is alternated by red bands. In the spandrels on either side of the transverse arches are round niches with hexfoils. The side chapels on either side of the choir have moulded cross-ribbed vaults; the choir has a radiating vault. The profiled brick triumphal arch to the choir rests on two short columns of polished black granite with limestone foliate capitals. The church has polychromatic tile floors. A one-manual organ made by J.W. Walker for St. Mary's Church Stoke d'Abernon in 1860, acquired and placed in the H. Marthakerk in 2003. The furnishings include a limestone carved pulpit bowl; two neo-Gothic figures of the Sacred Heart and Mary, as well as a small communion rail with rich carving in neo-Baroque style from the first half of the 19th century. On the side of the Hoefstraat a brick garden wall.
Valuation.
Church building of architectural-historical and typological value; principal form, detailing and material use are well preserved. By its design, inspired by the late-Gothic "Hague hall type", the church occupies a rather rare place in the overall picture of neo-Gothic architecture. The neo-Baroque communion rail belonging to the furnishings, two neo-Gothic figures and the neo-Gothic pulpit bowl have artistic-historical value and have been included in the protection. An added value is the important urban planning situation at the corner of Hoefkade/De Bockstraat/Stortenbekerstraat.
