Omschrijving
VOORPLEIN MET BALUSTRADES HEK EN KEERMUUR. Aan de zuidzijde van het kasteel grenzend onderkelderd en begrint voorplein, dat naar de op de as van de hoofdvleugel van het kasteel gelegen entree aan de Hagendorenweg een spiegelboogvormige afsluiting heeft. De rechte zijkanten alsmede de spiegelboogvormige beëindiging worden gemarkeerd door een rode bakstenen balustrade, die ter hoogte van de spiegelboogvormige afsluiting tevens keermuur van het voorplein naar de buitengracht is. De balustrade is afgedekt met segmentboog-vormige hardstenen afdekplaten en wordt onderbroken door sokkels met rechte hardstenen afdekplaten. Het gedeelte van de balustrade met het rechte verloop aan de ZW-zijde van het voorplein wordt onderbroken door twee hardstenen laat 18e-eeuwse blokpijlers en hek, die de doorgang van het voorplein naar het park ten zuidwesten van de zijvleugel van het kasteel aangeven. De pijlers zijn voorzien van een pyramide-vormige hardstenen bovenstuk. Het smeedijzeren hek, dat uit de 19e eeuw dateert, is even ten noordoosten van de pijlers geplaatst en bestaat uit een eenvoudig dubbel spijlenhek met een vleugelstuk aan de ZO-zijde; het vleugelstuk aan de NW- zijde ontbreekt.
Op de as van de doorgang van het voorplein naar de tuin ten zuidwesten van het kasteel wordt ook de balustrade aan de NO-zijde van het voorplein door een door twee hardstenen pijlers met hardstenen pyramide-vormig bovenstuk gemarkeerde doorgang onderbroken. Het hek, dat de scheiding vormde tussen het voorplein en het erf aan de ZW-zijde van het voormalige koetshuis is thans niet meer aanwezig. De balustrade strekt zich aan weerszijden van de hardstenen pijlers een aantal meters uit en eindigt dan abrupt. Op de ontwerpen voor het park van Kasteel Amstenrade door G. Duckers uit ca. 1808 en M.F. Weyhe uit ca. 1815 is het noordwestelijke deel van de balustrade doorgetrokken tot de nooit uitgevoerde NO-vleugel van het kasteel en vormt de balustrade aan de NO-zijde van het voorplein het spiegelbeeld van de balustrade aan de ZW-zijde ervan. De abrupte beëindiging van de balustrade aan de kasteelzijde moet waarschijnlijk uit het niet gereedkomen van de genoemde NO-vleugel verklaard worden. Wellicht werd toen ook besloten om de paardestallen aan de voorpleinzijde tot de loodlijn van de NO-zijde van de hoofdvleugel door te trekken, hetgeen de de abrupte beëindiging aan de ZO-zijde van de balustrade zou verklaren.
Even ten zuidwesten van de ZO-gevel van de paardestallen bevindt zich in de rode bakstenen keermuur van het voorplein, die hier deels door steunberen wordt gestut, een segmentboog-vormige doorgang naar de gewelfde kelders onder het voorplein, die ten zuiden van de paardestallen onder de Hagendorenweg doorlopen.

Description
FORECOURT WITH BALUSTRADES, GATE AND RETAINING WALL. On the south side of the castle, bordering an undercrofted and paved forecourt, which toward the entrance on the axis of the main wing of the castle located on the Hagendorenweg has a mirror arch-shaped closure. The straight sides as well as the mirror arch-shaped termination are marked by a red brick balustrade, which at the height of the mirror arch-shaped closure also forms the retaining wall of the forecourt toward the moat. The balustrade is capped with segment arch-shaped hardstone capping plates and is interrupted by plinths with straight hardstone capping plates. The section of the balustrade with the straight run on the SW side of the forecourt is interrupted by two hardstone late 18th-century block piers and gate, which mark the passage from the forecourt to the park to the south-west of the side wing of the castle. The piers are provided with a pyramid-shaped hardstone top. The wrought iron gate, which dates from the 19th century, is placed just to the north-east of the piers and consists of a simple double spile gate with a wing section on the SE side; the wing section on the NW side is missing.
On the axis of the passage from the forecourt to the garden to the south-west of the castle, the balustrade on the NE side of the forecourt is also interrupted by a passage marked by two hardstone piers with hardstone pyramid-shaped top. The gate, which formed the separation between the forecourt and the yard on the SW side of the former coach house, is no longer present. The balustrade extends a number of meters on either side of the hardstone piers and then ends abruptly. On the designs for the park of Kasteel Amstenrade by G. Duckers from circa 1808 and M.F. Weyhe from circa 1815, the north-western section of the balustrade is carried through to the never executed NE wing of the castle and the balustrade on the NE side of the forecourt forms the mirror image of the balustrade on the SW side of it. The abrupt termination of the balustrade on the castle side must probably be explained by the non-completion of the aforementioned NE wing. Perhaps it was then also decided to extend the horse stables on the forecourt side to the plumb line of the NE side of the main wing, which would explain the abrupt termination on the SE side of the balustrade.
Just to the south-west of the SE gable of the stables, a segment arch-shaped passage is located in the red brick retaining wall of the forecourt, which is partly supported here by buttresses, leading to the barrel-vaulted cellars beneath the forecourt, which run to the south of the stables beneath the Hagendorenweg.
