Description

CARRIAGE ENTRANCE GATE. Monumental wrought-iron gate with gate piers and retaining walls in red brick, from the end of the 19th century.

Double wrought-iron lattice gate at the drive of Zuylestein with richly decorated wrought-iron top section of volutes with rosettes and in the centre a monogram set in an oval field of Godard John George Charles Count van Aldenburg Bentinck (1857-1940) and his wife Augustine Wilhelmina Louise Adrienne Countess van Bylandt (1861-1916), above which a three-dimensional crown. Halfway up the gate piers is a rule beneath which per gate two diagonally crossing rules intersect in the centre. On this centre on either side of the gate a small blind coat of arms.

The gate is set in two gate piers of red brick with on the front and rear side a large (above) and a small (below) rectangular blind opening and on the top a profiled hardstone capping plate with heraldic lions with the arms of (Frederik William Child) Villiers (left) and (Elisabeth Mary Countess) Van Reede (right). Adjacent to the gate piers two retaining walls in red brick covered with hardstone plates and tapering in an arch towards the northeast, which are terminated by a rectangular pier with on the front and inner side a rectangular blind opening.

The gate was possibly designed by the architect P.J. Cuypers, under whose direction alterations at Kasteel Amerongen - also in the possession of Godard John George van Aldenburg Bentinck - took place around the turn of the century.
