Omschrijving
POORTGEBOUW. In rode baksteen opgetrokken poortgebouw (ofwel Voorste Poort genaamd) van het voormalige kasteel Zuylestein, uit circa 1635, onder met grijze pannen gedekt zadeldak met verhoogd haaks geplaatst middengedeelte onder met grijze pannen gedekt schilddak, waarin de poort. Tot in de 19e eeuw maakte het poortgebouw deel uit van een geheel, dat de oostelijke en westelijke zijden van het voorplein begrensde; in de 19e eeuw werd de westelijke vleugel afgebroken. Oorspronkelijk werd de nog bestaande oostelijke vleugel aan weerszijden door kleine ronde torens geflankeerd. De toren aan de oosthoek is thans op eerste verdieping-niveau afgedekt. Dit toren-gedeelte gaat om in de muur van de binnentuin. Van de toren aan de andere zijde van het poortgebouw is het fundament bewaard. Dit fundament gaat over in de haaks op het poortgebouw gesitueerde keermuur uit ca. 1700.
Ingangszijde: een dubbele halfronde poort, met in rechter poortdeur een getoogd winket, omlijst door wigvormige zandstenen boogstenen met een zandstenen sluitsteen met mascaron. Boven de sluitsteen een zandstenen gevelsteen met het wapen van de stadhouder Prins Frederik Hendrik. Aan het voorplein is de halfronde poort voorzien van twee wigvormige geprofileerde zandstenen aanzetstenen en van een zandstenen sluitsteen met leeuwenkop in reliëf. Op het eerste verdieping-niveau van het verhoogde middengedeelte aan voor- en achterzijde een schuifvenster met 6-ruitsindeling. Aan voorpleinzijde links van het verhoogde middengedeelte een dubbele staldeur en een getoogd schuifvenster met 12-ruitsindeling. Rechts van de poort van links naar rechts een venster als boven, een deur met bovenlicht met ruitvormige roedenverdeling. Links van het verhoogde middengedeelte aan de zijde van het poortgebouw, dat aan de oprijlaan grenst, twee getoogde vensters met 9-ruitsindeling.
De in historiserende stijl uitgevoerde dakkapellen aan weerszijden van het poortgebouw zijn van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Description
GATE BUILDING. Gate building (also called Front Gate) built in red brick from the former castle Zuylestein, circa 1635, covered with a gabled roof topped with grey tiles with a raised centrally-placed rectangular component topped with a hipped roof covered with grey tiles, containing the gate. Until the 19th century the gate building was part of a whole that bordered the eastern and western sides of the forecourt; in the 19th century the western wing was demolished. Originally the still-existing eastern wing was flanked on both sides by small round towers. The tower at the east corner is now capped at the level of the first storey. This tower section continues into the wall of the inner courtyard. Of the tower on the other side of the gate building the foundation is preserved. This foundation continues into the retaining wall situated at right angles to the gate building from circa 1700.
Entrance side: a double semi-circular gate, with in the right gate door a arched wicket, framed by wedge-shaped sandstone arch stones with a sandstone keystone with mascaron. Above the keystone a sandstone facade stone with the coat of arms of Stadtholder Prince Frederik Hendrik. At the forecourt the semi-circular gate is provided with two wedge-shaped moulded sandstone springer stones and a sandstone keystone with lion head in relief. At the first storey level of the raised central component on the front and rear sides a sash window with 6-pane glazing. At the forecourt side to the left of the raised central component a double stable door and an arched sash window with 12-pane glazing. To the right of the gate from left to right a window as above, a door with fanlight with diamond-shaped glazing bars. To the left of the raised central component on the side of the gate building that borders the carriage drive, two arched windows with 9-pane glazing.
The roof dormers in historicizing style at both sides of the gate building are from after the Second World War.
