Inleiding

Introduction

Office building from 1914 designed by F.A. Bodde, originally built for the Haagsche Commissiebank. The building on a composite footprint, freestanding on three sides, is constructed in the manner of the "Um Achtzehnhundert Bewegung".

Description

The building consists of three storeys and stands freestanding on three sides on the head of a building block. It is a good example of the traditionalist movement influenced by the "Um Achtzehnhundert Bewegung" in architecture whereby not only traditional but also contemporary forms have been applied.

The style in which the facades on the Prins Hendrikstraat and at the Prins Hendrikplein are executed are inspired by the Louis XVI style, classicism and the work of K.P.C. de Bazel. These two facades are clad with Muschelkalk stone. The attica and the entablature omit with guttae. In a stone is the year 1914 in Roman numerals. The facade on the Prins Hendrikstraat is symmetrical in layout and has a projecting central section with a recessed entrance section. The entrance is flanked by columns and pilasters which carry the entablature. The pilasters have leaf capitals and the columns a capital with carved elephants. Above the entrance is a balcony with balustrade situated; in the balustrade the year 1914 is recorded in a stone. On the second floor, on the outside of the projecting central section, two oeil-de-boeuf windows stand out with above them a relief representation of a pelican. The sculpture is by J.C. Altorf. All windows are framed and the steel frames have wrought iron glazing bars.

The facade at the Prins Hendrikplein does not run parallel to the curve of the Prins Hendrikplein but runs straight over the first two storeys and bent over the third. This facade has five window axes. The windows on the first floor are separated by pilasters. These have as termination capitals with ram's-head capitals. At the height of the third storey the facade recedes. Behind a balustrade a balcony is placed over the full length of the facade.

The facade on the Van Kinsbergenstraat is constructed in brickwork and consists of five window axes. The bay which borders the Prins Hendrikstraat forms an exception to this. This is executed in natural stone. The gutter line is simple. On the far left of the facade are two doors. The windows have plastered lintels and natural stone sills. The plinth is of hardstone.

In the interior, behind the main entrance is the large reception hall which has wall panelling with pilasters provided with bronze capitals with bird figures. Furthermore, there is still a bronze frieze and counter wall with bronze grilles. A large bronze grille, executed in forms derived from Louis XIV, gives access to the stairwell. The hall has a multicoloured terrazzo floor.

The stairwell consists of a marble staircase with marble balustrade and a round, fluted end pier to the basement storey and a wooden staircase with wooden baluster railing to the upper floors. In the stairwell a large, oval window with glass in lead in which depicted the coat of arms of The Hague and the provinces. The light cupola is provided with glass in lead. The corridor on the floor has wall panelling and doors with panels. In the basement storey a safe room accessible via a black steel safe door with an art nouveau ornament on the inside. The safe room has a marble floor and wall cladding.

Next to the main entrance is the commission room with a marble fireplace mantel, mahogany wall panelling and a simple stucco ceiling. The door frame with a wing door is decorated among other things with a meander line. The framing of the fireplace mantel has a meander motif, as well as side panels with profiled niches, provided with carved work.

Valuation

The building is of architectural-historical significance because of the integrity of exterior and interior, main form and detailing. It is a representative example of the "Um Achtzehnhundert Bewegung". An added value is the urban-planning significant situation on one of the corners of the Prins Hendrikplein.
