The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Bank building on an irregular footprint from 1909 in the style of the "Um Achtzehnhundert Bewegung" designed by architect J.C. Dorsser on the corner of Prins Hendrikplein and Prins Hendrikstraat.

Description.

The building has three storeys with a roof storey under a hipped and tent roof. The facades on the street side have a natural stone facade cladding with decorative bands at the height of the shopfront and roof line. Several window types have been used, both single and two- and three-light windows. A tower-like building body accentuates the corner and the entrance with a cupola and lantern. The facade at the square is four window axes wide; the facade at the Prins Hendrikstraat comprises two window axes.

The style influence of the "Um Achtzehnhundert Bewegung" is visible in this former bank building in the use of natural stone material and the historicizing formal language. The sculpture on the facades was made by J.C. Altorf. Striking is the rich detailing. The wall piers are terminated by stylized animal figures in natural stone. The copper-covered cupola is supported by consoles; the intermediate frieze is provided with tile tableaux.

The main entrance has curved wooden doors with faceted cut glass. Glass in lead has been applied in most windows.

The glass in the windows of the tower-shaped building body is curved. Wrought iron grilles have been placed for all windows on the ground floor in the facade along the Prins Hendrikplein. The roof is covered with slate; the hip of the tent roof is of zinc and the zinc work at the top of the hips is made in meander form.

Of the original interior, a hall executed in marble, a counter, the wrought iron balustrade of the stairwell decorated with scrollwork remain. In this room an Art Nouveau lamp is attached to the ceiling.

Valuation.

The building is of architectural-historical significance because of the integrity of main form, detailing and applied material. It is a representative example of the "Um Achtzehnhundert Bewegung".

An added value is the urbanism-significant situation on one of the corners of the Prins Hendrikplein.
