Inleiding.
Art Nouveau winkel-woonhuis uit 1901 op rechthoekige plattegrond, ontworpen door architect J.W. Bosboom. Het pand is opgenomen in de straatwand met aaneengesloten bebouwing.
Omschrijving.
Dit pand ontwierp J.W. Bosboom voor zichzelf als woning, kantoor en tekenkamer. Het bestaat uit drie bouwlagen en kapverdieping onder een licht geknikte kap met hoog voorschild. De dakbedekking van shingles is niet oorspronkelijk. De twee vensterassen brede bakstenen gevel in rode verblendsteen heeft een hardstenen winkelpui die rijkelijk voorzien is van Art Nouveau beeldhouwwerk. Links van de pui is een portiek met twee authentieke deuren. In de penanten van de portiek is de signatuur van de bouwmeester aangebracht met het jaartal 1901 en de gestyleerde initialen van de ontwerper: J.W.B.
Boven de winkelpui zijn ter hoogte van de tweede en derde bouwlaag driezijdige houten erkers. Dit deel van de voorgevel wordt bekroond door een trapgevel. Links van de bekroning valt een versierde dakkapel op; deze onderbreekt de dakgootlijst. Het houtwerk van deuren en vensters is zorgvuldig in Art Nouveau gedetailleerd; deze zijn getoogd en hebben onderverdeelde bovenlichten.
Het oorspronkelijke interieur is grotendeels bewaard gebleven. Op de eerste verdieping rijke interieurs in Art Nouveau: voor- en achterkamer met betimmeringen, plafonds en porte-brisée. Het kantoor op de eerste verdieping is geheel uitgevoerd in neorenaissance met betimmering, wandbekleding en dessus-de-portes met geschilderde Haagse en Zwolse stadsgezichten. Het trappenhuis is in rijke Art Nouveau uitgevoerd.
Waardering.
Het pand is architectuurhistorisch van belang als zeldzaam, compleet en gaaf voorbeeld van Art Nouveau. Zowel het ex- als het interieur zijn onaangetast; de hoofdvorm, de detaillering en het toegepaste materiaal zijn gaaf. Binnen het oeuvre van de architect J.W. Description.
J.W. Bosboom designed this building for himself as a dwelling, office and design studio. It consists of three storeys and a roof storey under a slightly pitched roof with a high front slope. The roof covering of shingles is not original. The brick facade two window sections wide in red facing brick has a sandstone shopfront richly provided with Art Nouveau sculptured work. To the left of the shopfront is a portico with two authentic doors. In the pilasters of the portico is the signature of the master builder inscribed with the year 1901 and the stylised initials of the designer: J.W.B.
Above the shopfront at the height of the second and third storeys are three-sided wooden bays. This part of the front facade is crowned by a stepped gable. To the left of the crown a decorated roof dormer is notable; this interrupts the roof gutter line. The woodwork of doors and windows is carefully detailed in Art Nouveau; these are arched and have subdivided fanlights.
The original interior is largely preserved. On the first storey rich interiors in Art Nouveau: front and back room with fitted woodwork, ceilings and folding doors. The office on the first storey is entirely executed in neo-renaissance with fitted woodwork, wall panelling and overdoors with painted views of The Hague and Zwolle. The staircase is executed in rich Art Nouveau.
Valuation.
The building is architecturally significant as a rare, complete and well-preserved example of Art Nouveau. Both the exterior and interior are unaltered; the main form, the detailing and the applied material are intact. Within the oeuvre of architect J.W. Bosboom it occupies a special place because he designed it for himself as a dwelling, office and design studio.
