Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Building block from 1899-1900, the curved facade line of which follows the building line of the oval square. The building block consists of four shop-dwellings and was designed by architect J.W. Bosboom in transitional architecture for master blacksmith E. Beekman.
Description.
Building block in rich transitional architecture in which stylistic forms from neo-renaissance are applied together with elements in the Art Nouveau style. The four shop-dwellings designed as a unit comprise three storeys and a roof storey in the continuous mansard roof. The ground floor is taken up by broad shop windows with entrance porticoes alongside.
Corner building 10/11 has a chamfered corner bay with a window section on both sides. Corner building Anna Paulownaplein 16/Bazarstraat 40 has two window sections on both sides of the chamfered corner bay. Buildings Anna Paulownaplein 12/13 and 14/15 each have three window sections. All buildings display a sandstone plinth. This material is also used for the high basements and the capitals of the pilasters between the shop windows. The facades are further clad with red-brown and/or orange facing brick. No. 10/11 shows against the corner bay a five-sided wooden bay over both storeys, which is supported by a sculptured, sandstone console. The bay is crowned by a balcony with a curved iron ornamental railing in Art Nouveau. The recessed right-hand bay contains below the entrance portico with doors and fanlights in Art Nouveau and above it loggias with arcades supported by pilasters on imposts. An Art Nouveau wrought iron ornamental railing has been installed for the loggia on the first storey; the loggia on the second storey has a wooden railing with arcades and balusters.
In the bay to the left of the bay the windows of the storeys are set in a tall niche with segmental arch and wooden filling with carved work. At this corner building the brick facade is built up to in front of the attic storey, of which the windows possess moulded lintels. The fanlights of the windows on the first storey display Art Nouveau stained glass. In the basement of the corner pilaster beneath the bay is sculptured on the side of the portico: "J.W. Bosboom 1900" No. 12/13 has a cornice-topped facade of which the cornice is supported by substantial consoles with sculptured heads. Above the windows of the first storey relieving arches with blocked cockcombs are applied. The windows of the second storey reach with their arched upper part to the cornice. The large wooden roof dormer with corner balusters, baluster railing and curved coping is flanked by two oeil-de-boeufs. In the portico next to the shop window are the doors with fanlights to the upper dwelling and the shop, both executed in Art Nouveau. Stained glass in this style is also applied in the fanlights of the windows on the first storey. Above the entrance of the portico ornamental wrought metalwork in Art Nouveau has been installed. In the basement of the right pilaster at the portico entrance is the name of the architect, J.W. Bosboom, sculptured.
The facade of no. 14/15 displays, like no. 12/13, blocked cockcombs above the windows of the first storey. The corniced cornice is supported by four leaf consoles beneath which wall columns with capitals, resting on sandstone consoles. Between the first and second storey are four ornamental anchors in forms of the Wiener Sezession applied, which together form the year 1900. The windows have fanlights subdivided by carved baluster columns and glazed with Art Nouveau stained glass. Above the middle window section a masoned roof dormer is built out, which is flanked by two small wooden roof dormers. The doors in the portico with their fanlights are executed in Art Nouveau. The entrance of the portico has in the upper part a filling with ornamental wrought metalwork in Art Nouveau. The signature of architect J.W. Bosboom is sculptured in the basement of the left pilaster of the portico.
Anna Paulownaplein 16/Bazarstraat 40 has the shop door in the chamfered corner bay and the door of the upper dwelling in the furthest left bay, both in arched frames and provided with fanlights with baluster columns. The door to the upper dwelling displays rich carved work with panels, ornamental lattice work and in the fanlight stained glass in Art Nouveau. The fanlight of the shop door is also filled with stained glass in this style. The moulded shopfront beam supported by pilasters is decorated with a sculptured frieze and has two leaf and two mask consoles.
In the furthest right and in the corner bay wooden bays are installed against the storeys. The right bay has moulded headers, of which that between the first and second storey is supported by openwork wooden corbels. The corner bay is cantilevered on a construction with rich iron ornamental metalwork. The graceful, pointed crown of this bay was removed in 1942.
The facades decorated with rendered bands and blocks have been newly pointed in recent times. The wooden cornice rests on mask consoles. The windows of the first storey are rectangular; those on the second storey have blocked segmental arches. The furthest left and furthest right bays are built up as gable ends to in front of the roof and contain there the round-arched windows of the attic storey. The latter gable is worked out more richly with a rendered frame and a crowning obelisk. In the roof planes are two oeil-de-boeufs.
Valuation.
The building block is architecturally significant as a well-preserved example of transitional architecture from the period around 1900. Typologically it is significant as an early example of a block of shop-dwellings with separate entrances for the upper dwellings. Added value is derived by the building block from the town-planning significant location at one of the curved walls of the oval Anna Paulownaplein.
