Inleiding
Aan drie zijden vrijstaand museumgebouw in eclectische bouwstijl uit 1886-1887 naar ontwerp van de aannemer-architect H. van Jaarsveld. Het museum, gebouwd in opdracht van H.W. Mesdag voor zijn eigen schilderijencollectie, is ver achter de rooilijn van de overige bebouwing aan de Laan van Meerdervoort gelegen, waardoor een ruim voorplein is ontstaan.
Het museum werd door Mesdag in 1903 aan de Staat der Nederlanden geschonken.
Omschrijving
Museumgebouw op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaande uit drie bouwlagen onder een plat dak, vier vensterassen breed. De bakstenen voorgevel bezit een hardstenen plint met rustica-effect en aan weerszijden bakstenen pilasters. De middenas is als risaliet behandeld en heeft op de hoeken geblokte natuurstenen pilasters. Aan de rechterkant bevindt zich een terugliggende lagere travee, waartegen de ingang - een dubbele houten paneeldeur - in een uitgebouwd houten portaal met pilasteromlijsting is gesitueerd, met de naam museum-mesdag op het fries. Hierboven bevindt zich een balkon met houten balusters. Onder het hoofdgestel is een blindnisje aangebracht. De rechterzijgevel is blind.
De schuifvensters bezitten T-kozijnen en een gepleisterde omlijsting met een hardstenen onderdorpel; op de eerste en tweede bouwlaag van de middenas is de vensteromlijsting rijker uitgevoerd, bestaande uit pilasters en hoofdgestel met tandlijst. Het hoofdgestel is gekornist en voorzien van rechthoekige panelen in het fries en een tandlijst. Daarboven is een balustrade.
Het gaaf bewaard gebleven interieur is afgestemd op de museale functie en bevat onder meer een trap met balusterleuningen, deuren met panelen en kroonlijsten, lambrizeringen en in de kamers op de eerste bouwlaag cassettenplafonds. De kamers op de derde bouwlaag hebben koofplafonds met lichtkoepels.
Het voorplein wordt van de straat gescheiden door een gietijzeren tuinhek op een gecementeerde voet met een hardstenen lijst.
Waardering
Pand met tuinhek van cultuurhistorische en typologische waarde als in- en uitwendig gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van museumbouw uit het vierde kwart van de 19e eeuw. Een historische waarde vormt het gegeven dat het hier het persoonlijke museum betreft van de opdrachtgever, de schilder Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Description
Museum building on rectangular plan, consisting of three storeys under a flat roof, four window bays wide. The brick front facade has a sandstone plinth with rustication effect and brick pilasters on either side. The central bay is treated as a risalite and has chamfered natural stone pilasters at the corners. On the right side there is a recessed lower bay, against which the entrance - a double wooden panelled door - is situated in a projecting wooden portico with pilaster framing, with the name museum-mesdag on the frieze. Above this is a balcony with wooden balusters. Below the main cornice a blind niche is incorporated. The right side facade is blank.
The sash windows have T-frames and a plastered surround with a sandstone window sill; on the first and second storeys of the central bay the window surround is executed more richly, consisting of pilasters and a cornice with dentil moulding. The main cornice is corniced and furnished with rectangular panels in the frieze and a dentil moulding. Above this is a balustrade.
The well-preserved interior is tailored to the museum function and contains among other things a staircase with baluster railings, doors with panels and cornices, wainscoting and in the rooms on the first storey coffered ceilings. The rooms on the third storey have cove ceilings with skylights.
The forecourt is separated from the street by a cast-iron garden gate on a cemented base with a sandstone edge.
