Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Former headquarters of the Bataafsche Import Maatschappij, situated as a detached building on the edge of the former Arendsdorp estate. The building, with a rectangular plan, was designed by J.J.P. Oud in 1938, built between 1938-1942 and completed in 1946. It was built in a traditional building style with a return to neoclassicism and the application of ornament. Originally the plan was closed and strictly symmetrical. On the rear side there was originally a right-angled wing, ending in the middle in a spacious, circular canteen. This component of the building was demolished around 1970 and replaced by extensive new construction with a fork-shaped plan.
N.B. The new construction from c. 1970 is excluded from protection.
Description.
The office building has a rectangular plan and comprises six storeys above the basement. The building's construction is of reinforced concrete. In May 1940 the concrete skeleton was only partly complete and it was not until 1942 that the building could be put into use. Only in 1946 was the definitive completion achieved.
The front facade has a symmetrical arrangement. In the central risalit the main entrance is placed on the ground floor. The flutes on the slanting side of the central risalit, the narrow, continuous wall posts and the staircases give a vertical accent in the horizontal structure of the building. At the top of the central risalit, two supports placed on the slanting side of the risalit support a canopy whose width corresponds to that of the central risalit.
On the short side of the building are two staircases. These are placed as glazed extensions in the middle of the side facades and are oval-shaped. The staircases end above the sixth storey and are connected to one another by a rectangular passage that runs precisely in the middle of the roof and parallel to the front facade. Halfway along the passage one can reach the aforementioned canopy behind the central risalit.
The front facade is 40 window bays wide. The central risalit has four and the flanking wings 18 window bays. The originally steel windows have been replaced by aluminium frames with a profile width approximating that of the steel windows. The basement windows are round-arched. Those of the first to fifth storey are rectangular and have six-pane glazing. The windows of the sixth storey, which gives the impression of a mezzanine, are likewise rectangular but lower and have six-pane glazing.
The oval-shaped steel structures of the staircases are seven window bays wide. Each window bay has an eighteen-pane glazing per floor. On either side of the staircases, four-pane windows are placed over a height of six storeys.
The facade is constructed of light-coloured brick. The basement of the facade and the central risalit are of natural stone. The ornamentation executed in natural stone, artificial concrete and majolica is applied among other places above the main entrance in the form of octagonal ornaments executed in concrete with medallions and shell motifs, against a background of coloured majolica. The two supports of the canopy are in the form of stylised shells. The low hexagonal windows of the upper storey are separated by ornamented hourglass-shaped pilasters.
The interior is in part still original. The central hall, which lies behind the simple main entrance with stone steps, still retains the round pillars, coffered ceilings and behind these the central staircase, supported by a structure of concrete arches and furnished with metal railings.
Valuation.
Office building of architectural-historical importance as a representative example of building in a traditional style with a return to the use of ornament. As such it is also of importance as a significant milestone within the oeuvre of architect J.J.P. Oud. The design was highly controversial at the time because Oud, who formerly built in the architecture of De Stijl, here returned to traditional forms. The distinctive situation on the edge of the former Arendsdorp estate is a valuable urban planning consideration.
