Omschrijving
Roomskatholieke KERK. Markant aan een der hoofdassen van de strafinrichting Veenhuizen en tegenover de eveneens beschermde hervormde kerk uit 1825-1826 gelegen neogotisch kerkgebouw, gebouwd in 1891-1893 naar ontwerp van rijksbouwmeester van justitie W.C. Metzelaar voor personeel en gevangenen van Veenhuizen. De schildering in het absisgewelf, voorstellende de hemelvaart van Christus, dateert van ca. 1950 en is van de hand van een toenmalige politieke delinquent.
Midden jaren zestig is het gebouw gerenoveerd. Bij die gelegenheid is het liturgisch centrum gemoderniseerd en zijn de oorspronkelijk hardstenen (spitsboog)vensters met gotiserende traceringen vervangen door betonnen exemplaren met eenzelfde vormgeving. Het bioscooporgel is van elders afkomstig en valt buiten de bescherming.
Sobere maar verzorgd vormgegeven acht traveeën diepe zaalkerk met zevenhoekige absis, drie uitspringende portalen en aangebouwde sacristie. Het uit rood-bruine baksteen opgetrokken gebouw is regelmatig ingedeeld door zich verjongende steunberen en wordt gedekt door (zadel)daken met boulet- of kruispannen; dakruiter aan de achterzijde; natuurstenen goten, gootklossen, banden en waterlijsten. De voorgevel wordt geleed door een centrale ingangspartij met profielsteen en gotiserende natuurstenen omlijsting met het opschrift SOLI DEO GLORIA, dubbele deuren met ijzerbeslag en aan weerszijden een rechthoekig en een spitsboogvenster; in de met een ijzeren kruis bekroonde geveltop een rond venster; links en rechts van de ingang een steentje met respectievelijk het jaartal 1891 en de initialen WCM (W.C. Metzelaar). De zijgevels zijn elk voorzien van zes spitsboogvensters; de eerste en de laatste travee zijn blind.
Inwendig zijn onder meer van belang de houten spantconstructie, zijnde een combinatie van een boogvormig en een driehoekig spant met houtsnijwerk in de tussenliggende velden en trekstangen; de vijf gekleurde glas-in-loodramen in de absis; het comtemporaine eiken- en grenenhouten meubilair.

Description
Roman Catholic CHURCH. Prominently located on one of the main axes of the Veenhuizen penal institution and opposite the likewise protected reformed church from 1825-1826, a neo-gothic church building, built in 1891-1893 after a design by state architect for justice W.C. Metzelaar for staff and prisoners of Veenhuizen. The painting in the apse vault, depicting the ascension of Christ, dates from circa 1950 and is by the hand of a then political detainee.
In the mid-1960s the building was renovated. On that occasion the liturgical centre was modernised and the originally hardstone (pointed arch) windows with gothicising tracery were replaced by concrete examples with the same design. The cinema organ comes from elsewhere and falls outside the protection.
Sober but carefully designed eight-bay deep hall church with seven-sided apse, three projecting portals and an attached sacristy. The building, constructed of red-brown brick, is regularly divided by tapering buttresses and is covered by (gabled) roofs with bullet or cross tiles; roof lantern at the rear; natural stone gutters, gutter blocks, bands and drip mouldings. The front facade is articulated by a central entrance section with ashlars and gothicising natural stone surround with the inscription SOLI DEO GLORIA, double doors with iron fittings and on either side a rectangular and a pointed arch window; in the gable top crowned with an iron cross a round window; left and right of the entrance a small stone with respectively the date 1891 and the initials WCM (W.C. Metzelaar). The side facades each have six pointed arch windows; the first and the last bay are blank.
Internally of importance are among others the wooden roof truss structure, being a combination of an arched and a triangular truss with woodcarving in the intervening fields and tie rods; the five coloured stained glass windows in the apse; the contemporary oak and pine wooden furnishings.
