Omschrijving

Description
Realized in 1926-27 after designs by W.M. Dudok, an ensemble of school buildings, originally named Julianaschool and intended for kindergarten education and ULO, constructed in brick on an irregular floor plan on a triangular site with two unequal transverse wings around a trapezoidal courtyard on the south side, with the courtyard walls and brick planting boxes integrated. Alternating low and high building volumes are applied according to the original function, of elongated block form or cylindrical. The wall planes are broken up by recessed windows, varying in size and mostly coupled, all with glazing bars and mainly executed in wood. The section situated on the northwest side around an enclosed play area, originally intended as a kindergarten, is essentially closed off by saddle and hipped roofs with overhanging eaves covered with blue tiles, excepting the wedge-shaped building block with upper storey and tower, which like the remaining building volumes is capped with a flat roof. The round tower is clad at the top with black standing tiles and the spire, provided with rounded and pinched finial crowning, with white tiles; alongside is the entrance marked by a canopy.
The facades on the side of the communal schoolyard at the Egelantierstraat have low wall planes, while the set-back facades on the side of the enclosed play area are broken up by two continuous window rows one above the other, one of which is in the roof storey; between the low transverse wings at the Cameliastraat a wall with canopy roof, originally intended as a covered sandpit. On the side of the Orchideestraat furthermore a curved bay projection and in front of the set-back south facade a wall with round pillar and terraced floor tiled in black and white geometric pattern.
The plastically stacked block and wedge-shaped building volumes on the southeast side comprise the former ULO section, whereby the two-storey south wing has a semi-circular projection on the short south side and on the east side, as well as on the southeast side a low transverse wing intended for bicycle storage, while after a wedge-shaped building block the low northwest wing adjoins under tiled saddle roof with hip on the northwest side.
The south wing contains the main entrance in the east facade, emphasized by a tower-like volume with internal staircase and polygonal chimney alongside; the east facade furthermore contains two large window rows one above the other between the tower and the semi-circular projection, to which an almost blind section adjoins. The wall piers between the ground floor windows in the east facade are executed in black and white stone, as are those in the southeast facade of the central connecting section. The west facade contains on the ground floor recessed vertical windows and on the upper storey three vertical window sections projecting outward, set in steel frames, of which the canopies as well as the roof line are clad with blue-glazed tiles; in the slightly set-back southwest section a narrow vertical window has been inserted at the junction with a far-extending canopy, as well as a horizontal window strip which at the south corner is turned. The semi-circular south projection is provided with coupled vertical windows with glazing bars. The almost closed east transverse wing has open spaces between the pillars placed on the wall to support the overhanging hipped roof. The short north facade contains two large window rows, whereby on the ground floor piers are present and on the upper storey none. The low northwest wing contains in the northeast facade recessed coupled windows with glazing bars, as well as a low semi-circular projection under canopy roof; in the short northwest facade five coupled windows with glazing bars; in the southwest facade situated at the enclosed play area likewise a series of coupled windows with glazing bars, as well as a double side entrance.
In the wedge-shaped volume near the southwest connecting section a platform with canopy and ironwork from the building period, built with a horizontalizing construction.
Adjacent to the schoolyard at the Egelantierstraat also brick courtyard walls and six brick pillars with planting boxes. School building with an originally unusual combination of education types and by the alternating application of cubic and cylindrical building volumes as well as diverse roof forms, colours and materials, striking chimney sections and canopies characteristic of the fourth phase in Dudok's stylistic development, as such of significance from an architectural-historical and typological perspective.
