The register's description

Aduarderzijlen.

Oude of westelijke sluis.

Aduarderzijlen. Markedly situated in the landscape and in the Reitdiepdijk, which protected against the sea until 1877, a SLUICE COMPLEX, situated where the Aduarderdiep opens into the Reitdiep and consisting of the old or western sluice from 1706 and the new or eastern sluice from 1867. Since the closure of the Reitdiep at Zoutkamp in 1877 the sluices have lost their sea-protecting function and the Reitdiepdijk has become a sleeping dike, which latter function ceased through the closure of the Lauwerszee in 1969.

The complex includes the likewise protected sluice-keeper's house from 1706. (separate monument number 15550).

Old or western sluice. Simple single drainage sluice, built in 1706 by order of the board of the Aduarderzijlvest and built predominantly of hard red handmoulded brick with corner stones and covering stones; iron cramps, anchors, sills etc. In 1969 the wooden ebb and flood gates were removed. The iron eyes are still present. On each of the sluice heads stands still an iron winch, presumably originating from the new or eastern sluice from 1867. The original brick arch bridge with iron railings was replaced in 1914 by the present open-work concrete bridge.

New or eastern sluice so-called Kokersluis, built in 1867 by order of the board of the Waterschap Westerkwartier to relieve the old or western sluice from 1706. A double drainage sluice built up of grey handmoulded stone with wing walls carried through internally and externally; hardstone corner pieces and covering stones and iron cramps, anchors and sills etc.

The sluice is enlivened on the land side by the application of recesses and decorative brickwork executed in yellow brick. Against the east side of the sluice wall a sandstone water-level gauge has been applied; on the central head on the land side lies a stone with the following inscription:

WATERSCHAP WESTERKWARTIER, JONKH. E. de WENDT ALBERDA van EKENSTEIN, chairman of the main board, laid the foundation stone of this sluice on 29 June 1867 in the presence of the gentlemen: L.H. van Hemmen, J.T. Wieringa, K.J. Sikkens, P.J. Schuiringa, J. van Weerden, D. Beukema, L.J. Auwema, J.W. Akkerman, chairman of the divisional boards and members of the main board

The bridge on the land side has iron railings which, like the concrete bridge of the old or western sluice, could date from 1914. In 1895 extensive repair and renewal works were carried out. Presumably the iron winches were at that time removed, respectively transferred to the new or eastern sluice. As with the western sluice, in 1969 the ebb and flood gates will have been removed.

Sluice complex consisting of the old or western sluice (1706) and the new or eastern sluice (1867) of general significance because of

-age

-the significance for the watermanagement history of the province of Groningen, particularly for that of the Aduarderzijlvest, active until 1864, and its successor the Waterschap Westerkwartier

-the architectural design of in particular the new or eastern sluice

-the marked situation in the landscape and in the formerly sea-protecting Reitdiepdijk

-the historically functional relationship with the likewise protected sluice-keeper's house from 1706.
