Omschrijving

Description
Description
SLUICE COMPLEX, called the Winsumer and Schaphalster sluices, which in terms of its present appearance dates mainly from 1917 and consists from west to east of a navigation lock called the Schaphalster sluice, a central navigation lock called the New Sluice, and a second navigation lock called the Winsumer sluice. The southern navigation lock, the SCHAPHALSTER SLUICE, has walls which are built up of red brick and partly rendered. The sluice door is a so-called Stoney gate, consisting of a framework of profiled steel clad with iron plates which is raised upwards by means of a lifting mechanism. The lifting mechanism stands on a superstructure of the sluice built up of red brick with wrought-iron handrails; on either side of the sluice is a staircase. North of the Schaphalster sluice lies a central navigation lock with stop plank closure. The CENTRAL NAVIGATION LOCK consists of two piers built up of red brick with three-sided terminations on the east and west sides; natural stone elements at the corners; in the rendered walls seatings for the stop planks (which are stacked over the full width of the opening); handrails of wrought iron; on the land abutment stands an operating mechanism for the stop plank closure. North of the stop plank closure lies the second navigation lock, the WINSUMER SLUICE. The northern navigation lock is the same as the southern one, but half as wide again. On the eastern part of the northern land abutment stands an iron pole with iron shield with the coat of arms of the Hunsingo water board; in the north-eastern wall of this abutment is inlaid a natural stone commemorative stone with partially illegible inscription: 'These three sluices were drained, repaired, provided with gates and new doors in the years ....-1917' followed by the names of the board members of the Hunsingo water board. Over the sluice complex runs on the east side a road with a road surface applied in 1963 with a fixed bridge with wrought-iron handrails over the two navigation locks and the central navigation lock.
