In de bedrijfsruimte rechts van de uit 1851 daterende koren- en pelmolen "De Wachter" bevinden zich twee eind-19e-eeuwse stoommachines met vliegwiel, drijfwerk en verder toebehoren. Machines van dit type werden in 1898 in de molen opgesteld ten behoeve van de olieslagerij en de kruidenmalerij en om tijdens windstilte de aandrijving over te nemen. Zij werden echter enige decennia later gesloopt. De huidige motoren zijn van elders afkomstig. Tesamen met de reeds beschermde molen vormen zij een voor Nederland nagenoeg unieke combinatie.
De Stoomaandrijving bestaat uit een 170 pk grote compound-stoommachine met twee naast elkaar gelegen cylinders, die een dynamo van het fabrikaat Bergmann/Berlin (nr 367760 type DD 80) aandrijft, waarmee de elektrische motoren van de oliewringers van "De Wachter" worden aangedreven. Op het bijbehorende manometerbord (met drie meters) staat: 'Nederlandsche Fabriek van Werktuigen en Spoorwegmaterieel, Amsterdam 1895, nr 192'. De machine werd oorspronkelijk geplaatst bij de Java Bos en Hout Exploitatie Maatschappij te Amsterdam, deed van 1942 tot ca. 1960 dienst bij houtzagerij Hemmers te Groningen en werd omstreeks 1960 overgebracht naar molen "De Wachter".
De kleine stoommachine van 65 pk, die een viertal kollergangen in de kruidenmalerij in de molen aandrijft, is niet gedateerd, maar moet eveneens van omstreeks de eeuwwisseling dateren. Het opschrift luidt: Carl Muller, Solingen-Kotten. De machine is afkomstig uit de strokartonfabriek 'De Toekomst' te Oud-Scheemda en werd eveneens omstreeks 1960 naar "De Wachter" overgebracht.
De beide stoommachines worden gevoed door een kruispijpstoomketel met het nummer 2623, afkomstig uit de zuivelfabriek te Bunne en vervaardigd omstreeks 1940 bij de NV Veendammer Machinefabriek v/h J. ten Horn.
Eind-19e-eeuwse stoomaandrijving, bestaande uit twee stoommachines, dynamo, manometerbord, jongere kruispijpstoomketel en verder toebehoren van algemeen industrieel-archeologisch belang:
- voor de geschiedenis van de stoomaandrijving in Nederland
- vanwege de aanwezigheid van een voor Nederland inmiddels zo goed als uniek type stoommachine, n.l. een dubbele compoundmachine met twee naast elkaar gelegen cilinders
- vanwege de functionele relatie met de beschermde korenmolen "De Wachter", waarmee de stoomaandrijving thans (weer) een technische eenheid vormt

Description
In the business space to the right of the grain and hulling mill "De Wachter" dating from 1851, there are two late-19th-century steam engines with flywheels, drive mechanism and further accessories. Machines of this type were installed in the mill in 1898 for the purpose of the oil pressing and spice grinding operations and to take over the drive during windless periods.
