Omschrijving

Description
Dating from 1911, a simple DWELLING HOUSE on an L-shaped plan with one storey and a flat-roofed overhang, constructed entirely in jointless reinforced concrete to the design of H. Hana and H.J. Harms as technicians and H.P. Berlage as aesthetic adviser. The whitewashed walls were cast, with the aid and therefore in principle reusable, using cast-iron formwork, for which the firm P. Denis of Brussels supplied the moulds, cast according to a system for which the American Th.A. Edison held a patent and which by the realisation of this house - with the application of a practically more feasible concrete mix - was introduced for the first time in the Netherlands; the cast character can still be read on the facade despite the rendering from the traces of the formwork joints. The roof and floor slabs, as well as the stair treads, consist of prefabricated concrete. The entrance is located on the left in the front facade in a porch, which like the loggia on the upper storey of the forward-projecting right wing, has two bevelled corners at the top. The windows, regularly distributed over the facades with the exception of the blind left side facade, all have wooden frames, with most windows containing casements, with a variable glazing pattern (six, eight, fourteen-light) and a profiling of the central mullion characteristic of Berlage's work. In the right side facade there is furthermore in the middle the side entrance to the kitchen, while the rear facade still shows a small step to the right. Internally the doors have a frame likewise characteristic of Berlage's work with the vertical stiles carried through at the top in profile. At the entrance a garden path with a floor mosaic has been installed with date and monogram. Small dwelling house with early-modern architectural design and of particular value from the point of view of the development of building technique as the first experiment in the Netherlands of house construction in cast concrete, with the possibility of reusing the moulds and thus of prefabrication and with the application of prefabricated components of reinforced concrete in the interior, whereby the building material determines the external appearance.
