Exterior description and setting

Largely plain single storey gabled house set on the W side of the Craigarusky Road, less than a mile N of Killinchy.

Front (E) facade has a left of centre modern glazed door (with an arched frame thick with shrubbery placed around door). To the left of the door is a sash window with horizontal glazing bars and a simple (1930s looking) surround. To the right of the door are two similar windows with one to the far right set at a slightly lower level (this N section of the house has an attic level). The S gable is blank. The N gable was two small attic windows with modern frames and surrounds similar to front.

To the left at the rear is a large single storey lean to extension with a large modern kitchen window to its W facade. Further to the right of this is a smaller flat roofed extension (with a modern window to its N facade) which merges into a larger single storey gabled section, also with modern windows. Attached to the S face of the small flat roofed section (and the rear of the main house) is a lean to conservatory. Between the two main extensions (at left and right) is an exposed section of the rear facade of the main house which has a modern window.

The entire facade is largely finished in rough cast and painted. The main roof is gabled and has a mainly asbestos slates, with some Bangor blues to the rear and to the lean to to the left at the rear. Three brick chimney stacks. Metal rw goods.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859-60 which matches the size of the present (though the extensions are not original). The building is not noted in the first valuation survey (doubtless it was well below rateable value), however, in c.1861 it was in possession of a Hamilton Caughey (who leased it from a John Cleland).
The house appears to have been renovated on a number of occasions in the twentieth century at which time the extensions were probably added, the gabled portion of the extension to the south may have originally been a detached outbuilding, however.
