Exterior description and setting

Two storey gabled terrace of c.1870s on the W side of Shore Road consisting of four houses.

No.34 is at the N end of the terrace. Its front E facade consists of a modern timber panelled and glazed door to the right and a large window to the left. To the first floor is a gabled half dormer with modern window and decorative barge boards. To the right of the entrance door is a plain sheeted timber door which gives access to the rear (via a passage). The rear is dominated by large one and two storey extensions with modern PVC windows and a door.

No.36 is identical to No.34 both at front and rear, only handed and without the door giving access to the rear.

No.38 is double fronted with a central timber panelled door and PVC window to either side. The first floor has two evenly spaced half dormers (as before) with PVC windows. To the rear there is a large single storey flat roofed extension with a large modern window and door. To the first floor of the rear are two small-ish square PVC windows, to the right, with a similar window set in a flat roofed half dormer, to the left.

No.40 has a modern glazed door to the far right on the front facade with a recent looking three sided bay window to the left. To the first floor are two half dormers, much as previous. To the rear is a large two storey flat roofed extension with modern windows and door.

The entire terrace is finished in lined render to the front, with chamfered quoins to No.38.

The rear of the entire terrace is mainly in plain render.

All main roofs are pitched and gabled with Bangor blue slates and five chimney stacks, all of which are rendered except for that between Nos.34 and 38 which is recent and in brick.

All houses have cast iron rw goods to front except for No.40, and all have PVC rw goods to the rear, except No.38 which has a mixture of cast iron and PVC.

Nos.38 and 40 have low ‘garden’ walls to the front of which No.38’s appears to be of recent vintage.

Historical information

According to several residents, this terrace was built in the 1870s by a Thomas Waugh, who also lived in one of the houses.

Evaluation

Two storey terrace of the 1870s consisting of four dwellings. All houses have been greatly extended at the rear in recent times and all have modern windows, however, the whole of the front facade is still largely original.
