Exterior description and setting

Single storey gabled block in the middle of a terrace on the E side of Main Street, consisting of a house and shop.

No.51 is a house. Front W facade has a slightly left of centre partly glazed stable door. To the left is a PVC window with leaded pattern, with a similar window to the right. To the left on the rear is a large modern window, with a modern glazed recessed door to the centre. The right hand side of the rear is dominated by a large flat roofed single storey extension, with PVC windows and a modern door. The front facade is finished in lined render with painted on ‘quoins’.

The rear is finished in plain and rough cast render. The roof is pitched and covered in pan tiles. PVC rw goods.

No.53 has been completely renovated recently and is now a chip shop. This building is slightly taller than No.51. The front facade now has a totally modern (but mildly traditional looking) shop front with panelled and glazed doors with two large adjoining eight pane ‘bowed’ windows. Painted timber sign above shop front.

The rear has been greatly extended and now has a large flat roofed extension. The roof is pitched with pan tiles with two Velux windows to the front and four to the rear. PVC rw goods. To all intents and purposes No.53 is modern.

Historical information

Buildings are shown on this site on the OS Map of 1833/4 and on that of 1858-60. This block may have been composed of two of the 67 one storey houses in the village noted in the OS Memoirs of c.1834.

Evaluation

Single storey block consisting of a house and shop of probable early nineteenth century origin (at least). No.51 (the house) now has modern windows, pan tiles and a large rear extension and No.53 has been converted to a chip shop and is now, to all intents and purposes, modern.
