Exterior description and setting

A twin-arched masonry bridge carrying a minor road over the Crumlin River.

Arch to north slightly higher than one to south. Random rubble basalt with roughly shaped voussoirs to segmental arches. Rough triangular cutwater to each face. Recessed arch and spandrel panel to each face. Four later shaped cast iron tie bars to each face. Ivy growing over part of west face. Vaulting of basalt rubble with gunite applied. Flat carriageway. Parapet copings rendered with humped tops; some repairs to parapet on east side including new cement render to coping. Plastic pipe emerges from parapet on east face. Parapets continue as field walls at the south end on both east and west faces, with projecting battered face on west side, beyond arches, and two broad buttresses further to the south. Modern hard landscaping comprising concrete kerb stones, stone chippings, and circular concrete plant pots to verge along carriageway at southern extremity of eastern parapet.

SETTING: The bridge stands in a rural area near a bend in the road with fields surround and mature trees in the immediate vicinity.

Precise date of construction not known but appears on OS map of 1832-3 where it is named.

Evaluation

This is an example of a late 18th or early 19th century bridge of robust construction which stands in a fairly unspoiled rural setting but the original lines of its masonry are spoiled by later strengthening tie bars and a modern plastic pipe.
