Exterior description and setting

A rectangular group of buildings arranged around a yard. Main entrance gateway faces east.

North side of yard occupied by a single storey modern shed with corrugated iron roof. South side occupied by a 2-storey gabled and slated range, rendered, with ledged timber doors. West side occupied by a gable-fronted 2-storey barn of basalt rubble: segmental arched opening now partly blocked up, containing a rectangular doorway. Slated roof; ocular opening in apex of gable. Main entrance gateway comprises a pair of square piers, smooth cement rendered, with moulded cornice; modern tubular iron gate.

SETTING: The building group stands a short distance to the north of Glendaragh House, within the extensive and secluded grounds of the house. It is surrounded by agricultural land and mature trees. An ice house stands in a field to the north-east (HB20/14/022C).

Historical information

Built as a stable yard in connection with Glendaragh House; date of original development uncertain but it appears on OS map of 1832-3, marked as stable yard, and may be taken as contemporary with the house which was built c 1805.

This is a group of buildings of the late Georgian period which is of some local interest as part of the development of the Glendaragh estate, but which has lost much of its original appearance through later alterations.
