Exterior description and setting

Linear two storey hipped roofed and rendered house of possible pre 1834 origin, set of a rise overlooking Strangford harbour. This house was originally part of the taller two storey gabled house attached to it to the SW, but the original property was sub-divided in the mid 1900s.

To the right side of the NW façade is a fairly recent single storey projecting porch with hipped roof and parapet. The front door is to the left of the NE façade. It is modern and half glazed. To the right is a multi pane window. Both door and window have somewhat modern looking mouldings with drip and label stops. The NW wall to the porch is blank and forms a parapet. The SW wall of the porch has a small window opening with modern frame to the right side. The left side is partly obscured with a conservatory / green house which leans to the rear wall of the main house. To the right side of the rear NW wall of the house is a small flat roofed extension. The NW wall of the extension has one sliding sash and case window right of centre (3 over 6). The conservatory / greenhouse extends between the back of the porch and the face of the flat roofed extension. To the left side of the rear wall is a small modern window. To the right side is a sash window.(6 over 6)

The NE wall of the main building has a sliding sash and case windows to the right (6 over 6) with a similar but much wider window to the left (12 over 12). Two first floor windows are similar to those but shorter.

The main SE front façade has four (largely) evenly spaced sash windows as before (6 over 6) to both ground and first floors.

The external walls are finished in rough cast. The main and porch roofs are finished in Bangor Blue slate. The NE and of the main roof is hipped and has a low rendered parapet dividing it from the main roof. There is a tall rendered chimney stack to the NE.

Historical information

Detailed story to follow with complete second survey of the ward. Below are a few preliminary points.

-A building is shown on this site on the 1834 OS map which matches the plan of the present property.

-This property and the adjoining house (to the SW) were originally one dwelling which owned by Baron De Ross up until the mid 20th Century. It was then sold to a family called Williamson who immediately renovated it and sub-divided it into two houses. The projecting porch and the open plan layout in the living room may date from this time.

Evaluation

Long two storey hipped roof house originally part of the taller two storey gabled house to its south west side. The whole ensemble, which may be of pre 1834 origin, was sub-divided in the mid 1900s to give the present two properties, with the hipped roof entrance porch added to the north west side of this house in the process.
