Exterior description and setting

A group of outbuildings located at junction of Old Bridge Road and Carrickastickan Road. Although individually not of special merit, they combine to form a pleasant roadside feature.

The group consists of a part two-storey/single-storey cart house to S, a single-storey animal house to the W, and a single-storey stable block to the E – all enclosing a small yard. They all have lime rendered rubble stone walls. They are accessed from the Old Bridge Road to the N, where pair of cylindrical gate piers terminates a short lime rendered rubble stone wall.

1. Cart house has a two-storey right block and single-storey cart house to left. Both roofs are pitched, that to right is natural slate with half-round metal rainwater goods; that to left is corrugated metal. The principal elevation faces N. Right block has a t+g sheeted door to centre. Aligned above is a 2/2 sliding sash window (without cill). Cart house has a large modern metal up-and-over door. Left and right gables are blank. Rear elevation has a central loading door.

2. Stable block is aligned N-S to E side of yard with rear elevation to Carrickastickan Road. It has a monopitched corrugated metal roof. Yard (W) facing elevation has three t+g sheeted half-doors. Its left gable is abutted by a slightly higher outbuilding with left gable is to the road. Its W face has a top-hung timber casement window.

3. Single-storey animal house is aligned roughly N-S on W side of yard with its right gable to the Old Bridge Road. Pitched natural slate roof, which curves, to the left-end following the bend of the left gable wall. Metal rainwater goods. Yard (E) facing elevation has two t+g sheeted half doors.

Historical information

Although buildings are shown at this spot on the 1835 and 1862 OS maps, they do not share the ground plan of the present ones. The latter are probably of later 19th century date as they are shown in their present form on the 1907 map.
