Exterior description and setting

Two bay vernacular house consisting of a two storey right bay and single storey left bay. It is aligned roughly N/S to the W side of Cottage Road.

Both roofs are pitched - that to right is natural slate and that to left is corrugated asbestos cement. Two chimneys, one to each gable – that to the left is cement dashed and that to right is brick. Left gable has a concrete skew.

All walls are cement dashed (unless otherwise stated). Principal elevation faces E. Right bay has central window to each floor – both are timber top-hung casements with painted reveals and cill. Left bay has a similar but wider window set to left with smooth rendered and painted architrave. To its right is a wind break porch, with smooth rendered and painted front face and t+g door. Left and right cheeks are blank.

The left gable of each bay is blank, that to left bay is smooth cement rendered.

Rear elevation has similarly placed and detailed windows as those to façade, with the exception of the left bay first floor window - a 2/2 sliding sash. Left bay windows have no cills.

Right gable is abutted by a lower single storey outbuilding. The exposed section is blank. Outbuilding has a pitched natural slate roof and lime rendered rubble stone walls. Two t+g sheeted doors to front face. Its right gable abuts the adjoining house HB16/13/059.

To the front site are similarly detailed outbuildings – one opposite house and a longer one to the S.

Historical information

A building is shown here on the 1835 OS map, but has no valuation – this indicates a small one-storey building. It cannot be tied to a specific entry in the second or revision valuations. The present one- and two-storey building is probably of mid 19th century date.

Evaluation

A pleasant group of vernacular dwellings and outbuildings accessed by lane off Cottage Road. Its raised right bay, providing extra accommodation over the sitting room is an interesting feature of vernacular hillside houses.
