Exterior description and setting

A one and a half storey, two bay vernacular house, with lower outbuildings to either end, aligned NW-SE perpendicular to Cottage Rd.

Pitched natural slate roof with two chimneys - one to each gable, that to left is cement-rendered and that to right is brick. There is a slightly advanced eaves course. No rainwater goods. Walls are lime rendered random rubble (unless otherwise stated) with tarred base course. All external doors are t+g sheeted.

Principal elevation faces NE. Left bay has a projecting porch set to its right end and a window to its left. Porch has a flat cement coped roof and lined cement rendered walls. An advanced platband runs around the porch above door level. Front face contains entrance door, its right and left cheeks are blank. Right bay has a single window to ground floor. Aligned above, to upper floor, each bay has a small square window. All ground floor windows are metal framed casements with a cement-rendered, stop-end chamfered lugged architrave and have concrete cills. Upper floor windows have moulded timber fixed pane windows and no cills.

Left gable is abutted by a lower outbuilding, part of which is now incorporated into house (see later). The exposed section is cement rendered and blank.

Rear elevation is cement rendered with remains of whitewash. It has a window to each bay at ground floor, detailed as those to façade.
Right gable is abutted by a lower outbuilding. The exposed section is as left gable.

Outbuildings:

That to left is single storey and divided into two structural bays, the left of which is a small shed; that to right is one and a half storey. Each has a pitched artificial slate roof with a cement skew to each exposed gable. Walls are as house.

That to left has a door leading to shed. To right is a window as those to façade (now incorporated into the house). The left gable is unrendered. Rear elevation has a window at left (to house) and a smaller 1/1 fixed pane window, in plain reveal, to the shed. The right gable is abutted by the house.

Right outbuilding has a central door to front elevation. The right gable has a loading door to upper level accessed by seven external granite steps running up the gable wall. Rear elevation is blank.

Historical information

A building is shown here on the 1835 OS map. It has no valuation so must have been a small one storey building. It is valued at £1.10s.0d in the 1862 second Valuation and there is no change thereafter. This constancy of rateable valuation implies that it had assumed its present two storey form by 1862.
