Exterior description and setting

Third house from right of a terrace of eight identical three storey/ two bay late 19thC houses on N side of Church Street.

Pitched natural slate roof with large rendered chimney to left end of ridge shared with adjoining house. Moulded render eaves course carries ogee rainwater goods. Walls are lined rendered and painted. Continuous cill course at first floor level. Left bay is narrower than the right one and contains the main entrance set in a semicircular-headed opening with moulded stucco architrave and with decorative key block. Four panelled door with beaded muntin and raised, fielded and bolection moulded panels. Over is a plainly glazed radial fanlight. Directly above is a single 1/1 sliding sash window to each upper floor, that to first floor has an architrave as the doorcase but that to second floor is slightly diminished in height.

The right bay has a canted bay window rising full height, with canted roof tied into main roof and sharing common eaves. Each face of the bay window has a 1/1 sliding sash window with horns. Those to second floor are slightly diminished in height.

Small front garden is enclosed by a finely dressed granite dwarf wall which carries modern wrought metal railings.

Left gable is party wall with adjacent house (HB16/11/033E).

Rear elevation is abutted to right by a two-storey return. Remaining rear wall is rendered and painted. It has a 1/1 uPVC window. At first floor left there is a similar window. At second floor left there is a 2/2 (vertically divided) sliding sash window. Rear return has a pitched natural slated roof and rendered and painted walls. All windows to left cheek are 1/1 uPVC units, three to each floor. There is a modern door at ground floor left. End gable is blank and so too is right cheek. Rear yard has small single storey outbuilding to rear with lean-to natural slate roof and rendered and painted walls.

Right gable is party wall with adjacent house (HB16/11/033G).

Evaluation

One of eight houses in a terrace on Church Street. The terrace has been affected by alterations but is still a significant set piece in the town. This house has been significantly altered. It is subdivided into three flats.
