Exterior description and setting

House to left of centre in a terrace of eight identical three storey/ two bay late 19thC houses on N side of Church Street.

Pitched natural slate roof with large rendered chimney to left end of ridge shared with adjoining house. Moulded render eaves course carries ogee rainwater goods. Walls are lined rendered and painted. Continuous cill course at first floor level. Left bay is narrower than the right one and contains the main entrance set in a semicircular-headed opening with moulded stucco architrave and with decorative key block. Four panelled door with beaded muntin and raised, fielded and bolection moulded panels. Over is a plainly glazed radial fanlight. Directly above is a single 1/1 sliding sash window to each upper floor. That to first floor has an architrave as the doorcase but window to second floor is plain and slightly diminished in height.

The right bay has a canted bay window rising full height, with canted roof tied into main roof and sharing common eaves. Each face of the bay window has a 1/1 sliding sash window with front window wider that the side ones, and all with horns. Those to second floor are slightly diminished in height.

A finely dressed granite dwarf wall which carries modern wrought metal railings encloses small front garden.

Left gable is party wall with adjacent house (HB16/11/033C).

Right gable is party wall with adjacent house (HB16/11/033E).

Rear (NE) elevation is abutted to right bay by a two-storey return. Walls of exposed rear elevation are rendered and painted to ground floor only. At left, each floor has a 2/2 (vertically divided) sliding sash window with horns and painted cill. That to second floor is diminished in height. All windows are as these unless otherwise stated. At right between first and second floors (over return roof) is a similar half-landing window.

Return has a pitched natural slate roof with cement rendered chimney to centre of ridge. Its advanced eaves course carries plastic rainwater goods. Walls are rendered and painted to ground floor only.

Its left cheek has a number of casement and sliding sash windows. To ground floor (from L-R) is a timber casement window, to centre is a pair of 2/2 sash windows, to right of centre is a 2/2 sash window and to right-end is a t+g sheeted door with brass knob. First floor has three, 2/2 sash windows. End gable of return has a large steel-framed casement window to ground floor and a tiny casement (serving toilet) to first floor right.

Enclosing rear of the small domestic yard is a single-storey outbuilding with monopitched natural slate roof. Walls are rendered and painted. There is a single window and a door on its yard-facing wall.

Evaluation

One of eight houses in a terrace on Church Street. The terrace has been affected by alterations but is still a significant set piece in the town. This house is little altered and retains most of its original fabric.
