Mill near Leitrim Bridge

Exterior description and setting

Located on left bank of Leitrim River immediately north of road bridge.

One storey building at north-east corner, formerly a water-powered mill, the wheel pit of which survives on north gable. Abutting south gable is two-storey range, that nearest the mill being the grain drying kiln. Both buildings have pitched natural slate roofs and random rubble walls. At right angles to mill is a one-storey shed with pitched corrugated metal roof and random rubble walls. Embanked mill pond immediately to west; this continues on south side of road, the two sections being linked by a culvert.

Historical information

Cited as corn mill on 1834 OS 6" map. 1836 Ordnance Survey Memoir notes owner as Francis Lindsay. Overshot wheel 13ft in diameter by 2ft 6in wide. 1838 first Valuation also notes presence of a kiln. Four townlands bound at this time.

Marked as 'corn mill and kiln' on 1859 OS map. The second valuation of c.1861 notes the corn mill as idle, but that a flax mill was now in operation (six stocks). Now belonged to Thomas O'Hagan. This was probably the building at right angles to the corn mill. It continued to work until 1929 at least.

Primarily of interest in terms of its change of use from corn milling to flax scutching around 1860. The building is not special enough to merit listing.
